Many types of woods duct is poison to breathe besides long term effects . That is why one needs to know what they are doing. Few comsumer grade sealers are but always read instructions and warning on them ;that is what they are for. Heck; smoke from grilling and smoking meat etc can cause cancer to those who breathe it constantly just like tobacco smoke.

Polyurethanes in Environmental responsibility

Polyurethane is not a bad thing, just do not inhale or digest and you will be okay.

Wax is a true woodcraftmans supply, but that will not work with outer housing. The Japanese also have a very unique way of retaining wood, Shou-sugi-ban / Charred Wood Siding / Burnt Wood Siding.

Turpentine is 100% natural and water proofs wood very well.
Smaller pieces of wood, like handles and such, are water proofed very well by soaking them in hot oil, drying, soaking again, drying, and so on, about 5-6 times. Makes wood very pleasant to touch too. That's what we used to do to tool handles back in old country. I still have a hammer with one of those handles, still pleasant. About 30 years old.

Besides being flammable, turpentine is classed by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as being toxic and hazardous to the eyes and nervous system after as little as an hour's heavy exposure. Not exactly what anyone would call a Green sealer! And proof positive that just because something is natural doesn't mean it's not dangerous to your health!

Here's documentation from the CDC list of Immediately Dangerous To Life or Health Concentrations (IDLHs).
