In 2009 I put in solar hot water. It's a tank up on my roof and it works amazingly well in Las Vegas. I have a HW heater but most of the year it just functions as a holding tank for the solar. I installed the system to save money on my gas bill, and it does.
The system has a brass relief valve, and twice now I have had to replace it. Well the cost for the repair, the valve, and all the leaking water has used up all the money saved in gas. If that valve keeps on going out, I will never recover my investment. So far it's been $300 in repair bills plus the cost for all the leaking water.
Is there another type of valve that lasts longer than 2 or 3 years?
What are the symptoms of the valve failing? I think it should be the same valve as you have on your water heater. I've never had a safety valve on a water heater fail. Is your tank overheating and the safety valve lifting to protect the tank? If so your problem isn't the safety, it's the heat balance in your system.
