The American Dream used to be "work hard and get ahead."... Now it's "fall down in Walmart and sue to get ahead."

Maybe you've already heard this one:

Al Calhoun the sharp, young lawyer was out doing his daily 5 mi. jog when he suddenly drops dead. His spirit rises and looks down confusedly at his corpse and comes to realize what's happened. He turns and sees the gleaming white marble staircase rising up into the clouds, and he realizes he's supposed to start climbing.

As he climbs, he gets more and more peeved that he's dead. By the tine he gets to the Pearly Gates and he's greeted by St. Peter, he's steaming. "What's the big idea?" he blurts out. I'm only 34 yrs old and in great shape! There must be some mistake! I can't be dead yet!"

"Oh?" says St. Peter. "Let me check the records." He pages thru a large book and then peers over it at Al. "You're Algonquin J. Calhoun, the lawyer and you say you're only 34?"

"Right."

"Well," says Pete, "according to your 'hours billed,' you'd have to be about 87 by now."

Nobody sued you for $500. But that is a cute story.

The truth of the matter is that when unbiased but knowledgeable people review claims they find the vast majority have merit. It is a myth that companies are taken advantage of.

Sorry, you do not know of which you speak.

Work in the trenches for a few decades, or ven just spend a month sitting and watching civil cases.

Yes, people do sue for $500 when there is an attorney fee recovery involved. There are multitudes of lawyers out there making their living on $0 or very small $ lawsuits. In certain areas of practice, you do not need damages, you only need a statute the provides you can recover your attorney fees if you pursue compliance with something that is for public benefit.

However people also sue for $500 and $3000, and $25,000 even though it is not financially beneficial to do so. I had a case go to trial for 3 days of hearings over $3,800. We spent $21 000, the other side spent $33,000 (both sides claimed to have won, and claimed their attorney fees). Sometimes ticked off people have more money than sense.
