I'm gradually getting rid of sections of the lawn which surrounds the mid-century home I bought last year. That will be my solution, less lawn, more vegetables and native plants. But a flock of sheep would also be nice...
We have a small flock of Southdowns and they do a nice job keeping the grass mown and fertilized though it can be spotty.
The condo maintenance guys mow the 20 acres of lawn with heavy duty equipnment. I hate to waste my time mowing lawns or shoveling snow. When I move to the south west I am going to plant a rock garden and leave the snowshovel in New Hampshire.
I have St Augustine grass, which is a heavy, thick bladed grass. Do push mowers work on this type of grass? I have a very manageable size yard w/lots of flower beds, I've been thinking of getting a push mower.
For you folks with St Augustine grass, my research (just a few minutes worth to confirm what I thought) shows that the trick is to dethatch regularly. A reel mower doesn't adjust very high, so thatch is a natural enemy.
