I love freecycle for the most part. We have given and received some great things. One such thing was the wood from an old deck. I was able to build a cute clubhouse for my son which saved me a TON of money and we didn't have to buy "new" wood so at least a little bit of the forest was saved... We have also used some of the wood on other projects.
My complaints are the people DO ask for some amazing and expensive things. Others give away stuff that is just not worth the gas burnt getting there.
I'm a veteran freecycler too. I'm glad to keep things I no longer need out of the trash. Lately, I'm running into many flakes that defy the community building that is behind the original philosophy of freecycle. I have one in particular who regularly replies to my offers, doesn't show up or even communicate they can't make it for the pickup, then emails me sob stories about their personal life and requests I hold the items for her, not to mention quite a few no-shows from others. I'm torn between reporting these individuals to the moderator or just ignoring these people if I hear from them on other postings. I've gone to the point of starting an informal blacklist I keep for myself of the really inconsiderate ones. I hate that what was once a completely positive participation for me has become almost more work than its worth. Savers here I come, boxes in tow.
Freecycle is old school. I am active in facebook gifting economies like the Buy Nothing Project.
Never had heard of this, eager to check it out.
