My car actually gets it best fuel economy at 65-70mph. I’ve driven so many highway miles that I’ve been able to consistently see this as ave fuel economy. 55 would actually reduce my fuel economy.

Also; speed limits on various highways in MA tend to be 50-65mph. Everyone does 80...including the police. Nobody is slowing down anytime soon. If you aren’t doing 75-80mph in the left two lanes, you are getting flipped off and high beamed until you move

That's right. The "speed limit" on California freeways 65 now but the average speed of traffic is 70-75, or 80 in the passing lane, and no one is getting ticketed for that. If you lower the "speed limit" to 55, nothing is going to change except that the few people who obey that limit are going to mightily annoy everyone around them.

Not this again. Anyone remember the 70s and national 55 speed limit. Might seem like a small difference but added hours to a driving day. I was so glad when they got some sense and brought the speed limit back up.

As I recall, the 55 mph limit was a temporary measure during a gasoline shortage. After the shortage was over, politicians and others noted traffic deaths went down so it was extended. The auto industry might have also silently supported it as it could delay modifications. Speedometers highlighted "55." lasted over a decade.

Back in the 70s and the oil embargo, the typical US car was 55oo lb and sported a V8 that got 15mpg. If you left your car running while filling up, you pulled away with less gas than you pulled in with. Goose the gas pedal to rev it up and it was like flushing a toilet-- the accelerator pump dumped 2 oz of gas down the throat at a time.

Now cars weigh 2500 lb, have only 4 or 6 little cylinders and miserly fuel injection. They all look alike because they're computer designed using the same formula for aerodynamics. Back then gas mileage fell noticeably at speeds above 55-60. Today it doesn't start to matter until 65-70mph.

We're using only half the amount of gas now than we did in the 70s. https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...mageBasicHover

BTW- except for the OP, none of us, thankfully, have mentioned "carbon footprint" the politically motivated none-problem. We should be conserving fuel specifically and energy generally for the sake of conservation.
Waste not, want not.

The falling MVA death rate started several yrs before the embargo and lowered speed limit, and continued for a decade as more & more autos were made with disc brakes. It's not like there was a sudden fall in death rate with lower speeds.... If you're old enough to remember-- driving a 5500 lb Oldsmobile with a 440cu in V8 and drum brakes could get inadvertently exciting at times.

This will reduce emissions by 25%.

Those of you in California need to write Governor Newsome and indicate that there is NO REASON to wait to implement 55 MPH in the Bay Area. He ALONE has the authority to lower the speed limit to 55 MPH tomorrow.

We cannot wait on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We need the 55 MPH speed limit NOW.

California, Oregon and Washngton missed all their greenhouse emission goals due to emissions from vehicles exceeding the environmental speed of 55 MPH!!

The Governors of all three of these GREEN states need to implement 55 mph NOW.

The good news is that there is NOTHING President Trump can do to stop 55 MPH!!
Good gawd not 55 again......a nightmare and beyond stupid and we who are sane will ignore it.......maintain 80-90mph as always.......

Most of time in Bay Area during rush hour (in normal times and not during COVID), you cannot even go 40 mph due to the traffic. So reducing the speed limit really doesn't make much difference, to most commuters during rush hours.

It can make a difference during off hours.

The speed limit should be raised, not lowered. Cars are safer and much more efficient than they were 20 or 30 years ago.

Lowering the limit too 55 will just cause road rage.

Hilarious. People are treating every freeway like the autobahn. There are barely any cops and the left want fewer. There is nothing YOU can do to stop anyone speeding anytime soon. Screwed the pooch the libs did on this one.

I fail to understand how changing the posted speed limit will make any difference when the actual speed of traffic on highly congested Bay Area freeways is well below 55 mph.
