I am aware of the rating difference. I should have mentioned it. Mea culpa.

Reviewing the potential reactor designs, I am impressed by gas cooled reactors that can operate at high enough temperatures to achieve similar thermal to electrical conversion efficiencies as the largest coal plants. I am NOT referring to the compromised design used at Chernobyl.

Nobody seems to be interested in HTGR right now. The latest design was a pebble bed concept but it doesn't seem to have much traction. I can't see any private company taking the technological risk. Public Service of Colorado had a HTGR back in the 70s but couldn't keep it operating.
