Should the government tell us what color to paint our roofs? My answer is no, but I agree that it would help to educate us how to save some energy by choosing efficient materials and colors.

I agree with the changes to asphalt coloring too. Asphalt color may not seem like a huge change, but if you can drop the temperature of the streets by a few degrees by reflecting some light, there would be less of an urban heat island effect which would save us some money in cooling costs and make cities a little more comfortable.

For the people who are sure that color doesn't make a difference, I'd like to invite them to a nice long outdoor debate on a hot, humid sunny day this August. To keep people from getting confused about which side of the debate you're on, you should wear black if you say color doesn't matter, and white if you think it does.

My coal tucks have stainless steel liners in the bed, I guess that is reflective as it gets short of a mirror. There's another flat piece that is painted black. Neither can be touched with an ungloved hand during a bright sunny day when the temps get up into the 80's and the truck has been sitting for a while.

Having said that a white roof or light colored roof in a sunny hot climate certainly makes sense. Not so sure it would be such a good idea in my neck of the woods.

Ideas like this actually make sense, I know Obama took a lot of Flack for the air pressure in the tires comment but he was spot on with that one. Better mileage and you'll get a lot longer life out of the tire. You learn to keep up on things like that when you have to pay $350 a tire and 5 miles to the gallon.

yup Huckleberry3911948 lots of Global Warming going out there..."great balls of fire"...we're just burning up...

globally-averaged temperatures were flat from 1990 until 2000, then there was a brief warming until about 2002, after which temperatures have once again remained flat.

If all this hoopla is true, then the government should probably mandate DARK shingles and roofs for all buildings in Northern climates, right?

Or maybe it would make MORE sense to just install adequate insulation.

It's amazing the amount of effort that some people put into denying that climate change is occurring.
