My husband might have a job transfer to Winston Salem. I've been trying to do some research but I'm not finding too much info that's helpful. We are going to be renting and want to live in an area that's safe and not too far from Malls, Movies, Restaurants etc. I have been finding alot of post on Clemmons. Is this a nice area or are there other areas I should consider?
Clemmons is a great little town. We live in N. Davidson Co which is close to the city but still feels like you're out in the country when you are home. You have a LOT of options in and around W/S. Do you know where he will work? That may be helpful for us to be able to point you in the right direction.
Nothing is really too far of a drive in this area. Everything seems spread out but the traffic isn't too bad so it isn't a bad drive anywhere. Highway 52 commute is a pain in the butt because it is so old, only has two lanes each side and very short exit ramps.
We did the move to Winston-Salem this year. Great city, We spent about 2 years looking for areas to move too. My advice would be not to get set on just Clemmons & lewisville. Both are very nice area's for sure. But W-S has so much more to offer than just those to towns. Just drive around any area you like and your soon know if it suits your needs. Yes there are a few not so great areas in W-S, your know if you are in them. Welcome to one of the nicest places to live on the east coast. My family are very happy here. Yes the summers are a little humid, but honeslty nothing like as bad as people had warned us for. This is a great city if you have kids. Lots of sports and outdoor activities to do, and Charlotte and Raleigh are just a short drive away. Best of luck with the move.
We moved to southwest W-S, really nice area, feels rural, but full city services and only 10-15 minutes to downtown. Traffic here is just wonderful compared to any other big city. Enjoy
Thanks! Can you recommend any areas to look in? We do have an 18 month old son so I'm definitely looking for a great place to rasie a family. We are looking at some houses next week. How is the West End? (Looking at 2 houses there).
From what I was told, my husbands job will be about 2 miles from Wake Forest University. We don't have children and would like to live in n nice safe area near shopping, movies and restaurants. Are there any nice subdivisions you can recommend or an area we should consider? I keep seeing alot of post about Clemmons so I'm leaning that direction but we've never been there.
Hi rox, and welcome to Winston-Salem! You do have a problem here--there are so many great places from which to choose! I live in Clemmons, and I love living here. It's a great place to raise a family, and there are lots of nice neighborhoods and tons of things to do either locally or within a short drive. The same can also be said for Lewisville, Kernersville, and Winston-Salem itself. Here are some thoughts for what they're worth:
--As a no-kids couple, you may want to consider living in downtown Winston-Salem. The area is really coming alive, with lots of new restaurants, bars, and other attractions opening lately. There are several downtown condo complexes that are very nice if that sort of living appeals to you.
--Neighborhoods closest to WFU include Sherwood Forest, Buena Vista, the Peace Haven/Country Club Rd. area, and Ardmore near downtown. Here's a link with more info on the city's neighborhoods: Winston-Salem, City of the Arts, Packages and Trails, Wineries, Golf (http://www.visitwinstonsalem.com/experiences/exp_neighborhoods.html - broken link)
--Just to clarify, West End is the neighborhood through which West End Blvd. runs. It's generally bounded by 1st Street, Broad St, and Northwest Blvd. This is a great area with beautiful old houses and unique architecture, and is a bit pricier due to its location. But there are affordable places to be found here, especially in today's market.
--There are tons of great little neighborhoods in the towns and surrounding county that are really small and tucked away. Sometimes it's just a quaint country lane with 8-10 houses around a small pond, or a neighborhood where all the houses are hidden by trees. You wouldn't even know about them unless someone took you there, so I think time spent with a knowledgable realtor would help ensure you don't miss a hidden opportunity.
--I must qualify this remark by saying it is a gross generalization with many exceptions, but in general, the west side of Forsyth County is considered more desirable. That's why you hear Clemmons and Lewisville frequently mentioned. But there are also many other great choices, including Kernersville, Pfafftown (pronounced poff-town), northern Davidson County, eastern Davie County, etc., etc., etc.
Thank for the reply with all that info Arbyunc. I will be flying in within two weeks and will check out those areas you mentioned. We have considered a condo in the downtown area but we also have a pretty big chocolate lab. I'm currently trying to find a realtor to make this easier on us but I also know most realtors won't tell you if there is crime in that area. Are those areas you mentioned safe to walk around at night?
Thanks again
