There are a number of national brands many people are not aware of that are based in the Greensboro,Winston-Salem, High Point area. The Triad is a major national hub in the Textile, Tobacco and Furniture industries. In fact the Triad is the largest tobacco hub in the nation with two of the three biggest U.S. tobacco companies headquartered in the Triad.
I think a few brands names are pretty obvious. They were named after one of the Triad cities. Winston and Salem cigarettes are made by RJR tobacco Co which is based in Winston-Salem. Camel, Kool, Doral and Pall Mall cigarettes are also made by RJR. Two other brands based in Winston-Salem are Krispy Kreme and Hanes (as in Hanes underwear). Texas Pete hot sauce is manufactured by the TW Garner Food Company based in Winston-Salem.
The headquarters and manufacturing plant of Lorillard Tobacco Co, maker of Newport, Maverick, Old Gold, Kent and True Cigarettes is based in Greensboro. Newport is the most popular menthol cigarette in the United States. Would have been nice If a cigarette brand was named after Greensboro but I guess Lorillard would get sued by Phillip Morris because "boro" is used in their Marlboro brand. Wrangler (jeanswear) and its parent company VF Corp is also based in Greensboro. Wrangler's corporate headquarters is located in downtown Greensboro. VF Corp is a fortune 500 company and is also the world's largest apparel company. Other VF Corp brands are Lee Jeans, JanSport, Timberland, Nautica and others.
Vicks (Vick's vapor rub) was originally founded and based in Greensboro.
Here are some major companies and entities based in the Triad
Greensboro: Honda Aircraft Company (world headquarters), Volvo Trucks of North America, Mack Trucks, Daimler Buses North America, Lincoln Financial (insurance division), Atlantic Coast Conference (college sports conference), The Fresh Market Food Stores, Biscuitville (chain breakfast restaurant), Cook Out (fast food restaurant), Kayser-Roth (maker of hosiery brands such as No Nonsense), Gilbarco Veeder-Root (maker of gas dispensers)
Winston-Salem: BB&T bank, (Wachovia Bank before it moved to Charlotte and was bought out by Wells Fargo), Lowes Food Stores (same Lowes family who founded Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse)
I would add to the list: Champion, Bali, Wonderbra, and Playtex (Hanesbrands) ,BlueRhino, Le Bleu, Primo, IMG College sports marketing, and Wake Forest University.
I am sure there are more that were founded else where. But how many founded here?
Goody powders (W-S 1932)
Salem College (First women college 1772)
Hanes (Hanes Brands Now)
Piedmont Airlines (now US Air)
Mrs. Hanes Moravian cookies
Krispy Kreme
Donuts, cigarettes, and underwear. Yay Winston-Salem!
