I have recently interviewed for a job at a non profit organization three weeks ago, I feel like the interview went well. I supplied the job with letters of recommendation from previous supervisors and previous people that I provided services for. Last week I found out that the job was checking my references. I've recently sent thank you emails for the interview and for them taking the time to review my information. I'm working to stay positive about my chances of getting this job but time is telling me that things may not come together for me. Should I feel that way? Should I continue to wait to see what happens or should I move on?

Hiring departments don't generally check references of people they have no intention whatsoever of hiring, but that alone doesn't make it a done deal, either. Don't pop champagne, but don't lose hope. People are busy and hiring timelines can be long. That's especially true in non-profits.

While it's a good sign that they're checking references, 3 weeks is quite a long time without any updates unless they told you it would take that long. At this point there's nothing wrong with touching base with them...a nicely worded email or phone call requesting a status update would be appropriate.

My References where checked last week, I was intended on hearing something this week but unfortunately I didn't. Is that to soon to be looking to hear something? I understand non profit organizations may take longer than others because of the extensive background checks that may occur but I also understand that jobs usually go into the hiring process knowing that it would take some extra expenses out of their account. They said to me after the interview that it may take a while for the reference check but they've spoken with all of my references.

When was the last time you contacted them?

I contacted them on Monday via telephone (no answer) I left a message for them to call me back they never called so I sent an thank you email to HR today. The thing that I have to take into play is that it may be a lengthy process because they took a month to contact me after I applied and they just checked my references on Thursday of last week.

Sounds to me like you've reasserted your interest. Maybe I'm overly deferential, but I'd lay off for a little while and let them do their digging.
