My husband has received a job offer from a company in High Point, NC. We will have to relocate there from our home in SW Virginia in a month.
I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on the place and surrounding areas. From everything we've heard about High Point, we have ruled that out for our home, but are looking for a town that would make his commute ~30 minutes with traffic.
We'd like to live in a quiet, low crime area, and prefer a more suburban or rural feel rather than a city if at all possible.
We will be renting and our budget is $1500 max for a home with a small yard for our dogs.

Any places you'd recommending staying away from is also appreciated.

Thanks for any help in advance!

You don't mention kids.
If SCHOOLS aren't an issue then you'll have LOT's of choices.
Take some time to consider what else you'll want to have.

Oakridge (just up 68). Kernersville. Both safe, suburban.

Your choices would be: Summerfield, Oak Ridge, Pleasant Garden, Julian, Climax, Archdale, Trinity, Kernersville, Randleman.

We enjoy living near Wallburg, which is 15-20 minutes from High Point. There aren't a ton of rentals, but you should be able to find something within your budget that meets your other criteria.

Welcome to the area!

Schools aren't an issue. We do not have children.

We'd like to have a decent amount of shopping nearby and friendly people.
We have a cat that likes to explore the neighborhood, so I'm not looking at places near lots of major highways (for obvious reasons)

Other than that, we're pretty flexible.

We really liked the area around Oak Ridge. But I'm glad we didn't buy there in 2011 when we moved to the Triad - traffic would have been much worse than where we ended up (near Wallburg).

OP, where are you moving from?

Thanks for the input on Oak Ridge! That does help! We don't want to deal with really bad traffic everyday.

We are moving from SW Virginia. Near Virginia Tech.

There are some nice areas of High Point, and $1,500 would probably get you a home in one of those nicer areas - in case you don't want to completely eliminate HP from consideration. I suspect having dogs will be the biggest hurdle in finding the right home.

Sorry I don't have specific suggestions on which areas. I've never rented in the area. I did a quick search for homes for rent on Zillow, on ~1/6 to 1/2 acre and allowing pets, and found a few under $1,500. Make sure to specify a fenced yard if you need that.

What areas of highpoint would you recommend in the 225-280K price range? We're looking for diversity, middle/upper middle class professional area. Schools ARE an issue. Still not sure if we want something urban, suburban, or rural. We're very open to a wide range of possibilities. The greatest concerns are price, schools, and neighborhood demographics (e.g., professionals, educated, etc.)
