Just to clarify, definitely not looking for another NYC. I prefer Cleveland like town, a mix of urban and suburban. Love the feel of Philadelphia, but hate the cold. And I love driving, just that I also like walking, and don’t like the feeling of geographical or social isolation.

Perhaps Raleigh has changed, it seemed a bit uninspiring 8 years ago. What are the neighborhoods in W-S that is closer to the urban core where it’s possible to walk to a store and a playground, or even just to take walks along a sidewalk? I always wanted to visit Charlotte and Ashville, but I doubt we would live in either. The healthcare management opportunities there are not as prominent in Ashville for sure.

So what are other possible areas to live in, to commute to WS or Eden? The ones that are similar to your discription of WS? And does Greenboro have a small utban core as well?
Every city in NC has a very small urban core surrounded by suburban development. Its not like Cleveland or Philly, either.

Some close-in neighborhoods in Winston-Salem include Ardmore, West End and Old Salem. Winston-Salem and Greensboro are very similar in many ways.

I assume schools are an issue for you? One potential hiccup is that the schools in the close-in neighborhoods are sometimes not that great.

What is your budget for a house?

Here's a couple of houses in Ardmore: https://www.realtor.com/realestatean...6-51564#photo0

I agree with my friends here. Visit Winston-Salem and see what you think. Eden is a very small town with a high unemployment rate. Winston-Salem is a lovely city that would come closer to suiting your needs.

Do understand that public transportation is nothing like it is in the Northeast.

While I understand what people are saying about Winston-Salem, the OP mentioned several posts back that the current job possibility in Eden is a much better career opportunity, while the job opportunity in Winston-Salem is more of a lateral move.

If there's still a concern about wanting to be in a more urban environment than what could be found in Eden, the OP may want to consider living on the Northwest/North side of Greensboro to still be somewhat close to Eden. The OP specifically mentioned not really liking the atmosphere of large homes on large lots, which is basically a description of Oak Ridge and Summerfield that some posters have recommended.

Although those communities are nice, if the OP's husband is going to have a longer commute anyway (which I never like to recommend), the short extra distance to NW/N Greensboro (which is still suburban but closer to amenities than being further out in NW Guilford County) may result in an area more fitting to her family's desires than the exurbia of Summerfield or Oak Ridge. Plus the commute to Eden would at least would be going against the flow of heavier traffic during rush hour, which would be a plus. It would be easier to get to Eden from Greensboro than Winston-Salem.

You mentioned healthcare management? I would think the opportunities for advancement would be leaps and bounds better in Winston-Salem vs in Eden. Winston-Salem is home to Bowman Gray Scool of Medicibe at Wake Forest University. It’s a well-regarded school and hospital. Eden is a small town that lost its major manufacturing center many years ago and has been struggling since.

If you were uninspired by Raleigh you sure are not going to like these other places. Yes, coming from Queens it's going to be a culture shock.

The opportunity in Eden is in the Morehead hospital which was bought by UNC. It was bankrupt, but supposedly was saved through the acquisition. Hopefully it’s not a dead end. That’s why it’s even in consideration. But living there is not an option. I can’t see myself living in exurbia, especially with two little ones.

Winston-Salem is a GREAT small city with wonderful livability.
Thank you. I mentioned in the earlier post that the opportunity is in the Morehead hosptial which merged with UNC. Eventhough it was bankrupt, I would think that with the UNC backing it has a bright future. I would hope...

Winston-Salem seems very attractive to mw, and it’s only one hour to Charlotte and The Triangle. Greensboro is a bit closer to Eden. We currently live in Forest Hills, Queens which is a lovely family neighborhood, however it is still overcrowded. It’s very green has a main street with shops and restaurants and has several playgrounds. The residential architecture is Tudor, modern, some colonial revival and McMansions. I love the feel of it, how green and small it is, but it’s still very densely populated and getting expensive by the minute. Coops and condos are reaching $1million. Houses are already at $1million just the very basic, in poor condition ones. Nurseries have waitlists, parking garages are $225 a month and street parking is hard to find.

Eden isn't even "exurbia". It's just a less-than-thriving small town. Will you get to interview for both jobs? I know nothing about healthcare management or what would be a dead-end job or not. All I know is I would much rather live and work in Winston-Salem.

If I worked in healthcare I'd like to work with people who are interested in taking care of their health. There are 100 counties in North Carolina. Not sure if you're familiar with the County Health Rankings site, but in 2017 they ranked Rockingham County as #75 out of 100 in Healthcare Outcomes and #74 out of 100 in Health Factors. Forsyth County (where Winston-Salem is) ranked 36 (outcomes) and 43 (factors). Guilford County (Greensboro) ranks 29 and 27, respectively.

WS could work well for you, depending on your expectations. Nice, growing downtown, but it should feel very spacious, even compared to Forest Hills. I have family in Astoria, and when they visit, they seem to appreciate the opportunity to stretch out a little while still having things to do.

Solid arts scene, buoyed by the presence of the UNC School of the Arts, a professional arts conservatory where you can see some pretty incredible plays, concerts, operas, etc., as well as Wake Forest University. There's a great film festival (River Run) in April/May and some decent options for live music. There's a beautiful old Moravian village (Old Salem) just south of downtown that's a sort of living museum. The hospitals are quite good (both Wake Forest Baptist and Novant Forsyth... not sure where your husband's opportunity is). The area is very pretty, hilly, and green, and you can be in the mountains within an hour or so.

Others have mentioned this, but neighborhoods to consider include West End, Ardmore, Buena Vista, and downtown. Maybe throw in Old Sherwood if you're willing to go for something a little more suburban, but where you can still find sidewalks and parks (depending on the specific part of the neighborhood). Neighborhood schools vary in quality (some excellent, some not so good), so if that's a concern, it could narrow your search. But there are some very good magnet and private schools.

Don't know anything about Eden. I like Greensboro a lot and it has a lot of the things Winston-Salem does. It even has an edge in areas like ethnic food. Overall, I prefer WS, but the two have an extraordinary amount in common for two cities just a half hour apart. Still, if it's a choice between living and working in WS or living in Greensboro and working in Eden, I'd probably choose the first option.

I'd probably choose the Winston-Salem job, to avoid the commute and be closer to the culture.

However, if you decide to go for the Eden job for the better career opportunity, definitely live in Greensboro. It's got very similar offerings as Winston in terms of culture and will be a shorter commute (I live in Greensboro myself). My wife is a stay-at-home mom with two little ones as well and Greensboro has some good options for families--Greensboro Children's museum, public library free programming, lots of parks (esp. Lebauer Park and Country Park), Greensboro Science Center, several affordable swim & tennis clubs, etc. As far as Greensboro neighborhoods, Sunset Hills, Lindley Park, Westerwood are a little closer to the urban core. There are other threads on this site that can help you find "good" neighborhoods in either city, Greensboro or W-S. Good luck!
