We live in PA but thinking about a road trip for furniture as we are building a new home. Living room, dining room and bedroom as well as other random pieces. Spending $15,000 and wondering if it is worth the trip. Are there taxes on furniture purchased in NC and shipped to PA? Are the discounts so large that it is worth the drive and possibly two day stay? Other thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your input. CD always comes through.

If you manage to escape the NC sales tax (~6%) what will PA charge you instead?
Yo would file the transaction with them... right?

There goes that thought. How about pricing? My thought was that the state might support the furniture industry with a tax free sale.

It's highly unlikely that North Carolina would do that. Even the popular "Tax Free Holiday" on school related items and clothing in the late summer was done away with several years ago.

Hate to burst your bubble. You would be paying NC tax and they will not give you any tax-free breaks

When you buy something (anything) in NC and have it shipped out of state, you do not pay NC sales tax. On a large item like furniture, you need to weigh the savings on sales tax vs. the cost of shipping... and in your case, the cost of the trip itself.
