Well, you can either whine and moan about it, or decide to take a positive approach and appreciate Winston-Salem for what it does have to offer. Life is what you make it.

Very true! I have had my pangs of homesickness and boredom, but I always try to snap myself out of it before it gets me in a dark hole. So much of your happiness is a state of mind. However, I think W-S still has some work to do to make the downtown more lively. I like the look of the brick buildings and some of the restaurants are cool like Sweet Potatoes on Trade St. and Mellow Mushroom. For the cost of living, W-S isn't so bad.....

I talked to a guy I know the other day from Durham and he insists that Greensboro is a much better fit for what I'm looking for out of a down town scene....Is that true?

And thanks for the kind words...but I gotta be honest with you...if you have to reach all the way down for Mellow Mushroom to speak about cool restaurants....im in trouble.

Anyway....Greensboro????

Charlotte is absolutely nothing like Buckhead - neither the Buckhead of the 80s/90s nor of today. And do you equate Buckhead with Downtown ATL? Also, Raleigh is nothing like Athens. It almost sounds as if you are forming an opinion of these places based upon a brief encounter with them. Exactly what kind of nightlife do you not consider "douchey"? Greensboro has all the kinds I cannot stand, where rich and pseudo-rich yuppie spawn drink douchetinis and blather about how drunk they were the previous night, as well as those where neo-hillbillies ride mechanical livestock, and those where shootings resulting from some thug's bruised ego are a weekly occurance. My preference growing up was for the kind like Fox's and Moore's, which were once downtown and were ideal locations to meet people from all walks of life, without anyone putting on airs and without drunken college girls doing the dance, puke, dance routine. If you like the kind of place where you can walk through the door, spend fewer than 5 minutes talking to some random chick and then take her to a hotel room, then G'boro has plenty of those. I find myself there more often than I'd care to admit for just those reasons, and never for more than 30 minutes on any given night. But if you want the type of place where you can go meet and get to know reasonably intelligent people - where people go to spend the evening and not just a few minutes as part of a pub crawl - then we have those too, but you'll need to look (and drive) to find them.

no...ive lived everywhere Im talking about. Save for Raleigh...and I have worked and met my girlfriend there....and the nightlife your talking about...NOT what Im looking for. The nightlife you mentioned as an alternative....thats what im talking about...and I wasnt saying I liked Greensboro...I was asking if it was better than Winston Salem...and your right Charlotte is not as bad as buckhead...its worse...its the worst place I've EVER lived. But I do recognize that it is a place some ppl love...I just dont get why.

I don't get why you think so negative of Charlotte! I mean damn i lived in atl 3 years and i really don't see the difference except that Atl has alot more highway traffic because nobody lives in the city. And by the way , 90% of the entertainment venues in the atl metro are not even located inside atlanta. At least there is entertainment actually inside of charlotte. Why does every body from the Atl forum speak so nastily of Charlotte. Damn, see how much we really care about AtL in the Charlotteforum!!

The person who wrote in 2009 that Winston-Salem had a dead downtown really surprised me. Winston-Salem's downtown has been improving significantly, and by 2009, it was pretty good. Now it is even better. This is a cool place. Also, the quality of life related to the cost of living here is excellent. Check out Krankie's Coffee, Camino Bakery, the Trade Street restaurants and music clubs the Garage and Ziggy's, just to name a few locations where you will find a cool vibe. I love the diversity and the authenticity of this town. It's also not stuck up. You can have a great life here. Have a good attitude and you will love it! I grew up in Manhattan, have lived in the East Bay of San Francisco, the Boston area and D.C. There is a lot more going on in Winston-Salem than meets the eye and the folks are really friendly. It is a place where it is easy to get involved and to make a positive difference. Come and become part of the effort to make Winston-Salem one of the best cities in the state and the southeast!

Skip, I have lived in Winston-Salem for most of my adult life. I have also lived in Greensboro and Charlotte. I am 50 years old and probably not in your demographic but my (admittedly biased) opinion is that you are selling the Twin City short. We are not Atlanta or Charlotte or Raleigh nor do we want to be. Do we have old people and college students? Of course. Do we have a growing population, especially downtown, of young professionals and families that would be your peers? Definitely. Sorry to say but we also have our fair share of "douchery" but those folks are pretty easy to ignore in my experience. I am not sure what your hobbies or interests are but Winston-Salem is a friendly place and I suspect you would make friends easily.

I also think Winston-Salem's downtown is much closer to the "vibe" you are looking for than you will find in Greensboro or Charlotte. I am not familiar with Raleigh or Durham's downtown. We have plenty of great restaurants and dive bars in the downtown core, not to mention several theaters and a growing mix of retail offerings. Are we at "critical mass" just now? Probably not, but the place is so much more than it was even 5 or 6 years ago. The investment being made in downtown Winston-Salem by Wake Forest and the medical school along with other private companies is paying off and I believe the best is yet to come. Get in while you can!

Good luck with your relocation. See you around!

This thread is from 4 and a half years ago, so I'd imagine ol' skip landed someplace one way or another.

But yeah, there is a "hipster" crowd in Winston if you're into that sort of thing.
