OK, now that we will be moving shortly I want to cut all ties with Charter cable. They are just horrible and to darn expensive!!
Any thoughts on high spped internet service providers? I think that we will have problems getting AT & T Uverse because the home is older. What about AT & T regular internet or bellsouth thru the phone lines?
Also, we are thinking about Dish network or Direct TV. Dish is cheaper so that wins brownie points with me! I have heard from Charter of course about rate hikes every few months. Is there any truth to that? I do not need all of the bells and whisltes, just basic channels and of course CNN.
THANKS!

AT&T does not cover every house in the Upstate. You may be stuck with Charter even if you really don't want it. Do you have an address here now? If so go to AT&T's website and check for coverage. FWIW, AT&T lied to me online about being able to get internet in Mauldin so you might want to call them.

Charter is the worst ISP for internet in the nation as voted by users (article in PC magazine).

ATT (formerly Bellsouth) DSL is very good, cheaper if you have service.

Cheapest way to get CNN is probably Dish America 100 package. Cheaper than DirecTV and much cheaper than Charter. Charter has some teaser rates that are low, but it's just a trap. They hike the rates up in 6 months to astronomical rates.

We have our DSL through ATT and DirecTV. We are pleased with both. I cut the Charter Cable wires off even with the ground when we moved here.

I will look into AT & T for internet. I still would like to hear a few more responses about Dish vs. Direct TV.

I and my team at work now work from home. I have Charter cable modem internet, and my boss has AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) DSL. I honestly can't tell a performance difference when we do our face to face work days at her house. If AT&T is cheaper, I'd go with that.

Re: Direct TV vs Dish - am I crazy, or weren't these 2 supposed to be merging??

It seems like somebody cut my Charter wires off everytime I try to get on the internet.

Gotta agree with you on that. So frustrated to have no other choice--can't even get AT&T DSL here at our house. One would think that an area like Greenville would be a magnet for some true competition. My hometown in Indiana just had a company put in fiber optics and the town only has a population of 15,000 or so. The folks there already had two choices for good internet service.

I got Charter for internet only for $19.95. People told me it wouldn't be that cheap unless I bundled, but what I did exactly was put in for internet and phone bundled, then when they didn't get it all installed in one day, I canceled the phone part and just kept the internet. It costs only $19, month after month. Then you could go with Dish for TV and still be ahead of any bundled prices I believe. I think cable is the best way to go on internet. Beats the sox off any DSL you will get for comparable price in terms of speed. I'm not going to comment on reliability, as I've had great service, but won't argue with those who have had problems and couldn't get service from Charter. But I don't think AT&T is any immaculate service provider either. I can't get their DSL where I live anyway.

Verizon DSL is an option for some folks depending where you live....I know it's available in some parts of Simpsonville.

As for DirecTV vs. Dish, no merger will happen anytime soon, especially due to anti-trust laws. There is a possiblility Dish may merge with TiVo I've heard. Dish does have the lowest prices compared to DirecTV though.

As for phone, I have Ooma and love it. I got a great deal on their system that you purchase online, Wal-Mart or BestBuy, etc... Hook it up to your highspeed internet and you basically have free phone for ever. Works as good as Charter phone. (They do charge you federal taxes after the first year...).

Lastly depending if you have cellular service and what plan, you could tether your cell phone to your PC and get your internet that way. I do it over Sprint on my laptop on the road and it works very well.
