Given the Greenville News has decided to price their newspaper higher than those of any major metropolis, I decided I was going to no longer pay that price. Being in Greer, and close to the county line, I found I could pick up the Herald-Journal for a more reasonable price.
I was surprised to find that it is far superior to the Greenville News, not just cheaper.
They don't just cut and paste their national news and baseball stats from the USA Today. They have superior comics. They include lighthearted sections like "Diversions". They have better TV listings. All around a better paper.
About my only complaint is that it also has a right wing slant, rather than a true balance to its editorial content. But, I guess one can't expect everything.
My suggestion, if you're a paper reader, and are sick of being ripped off by the Greenville News, is to try the Herald Journal.
Is that the newspaper behind goupstate.com? Before we moved here we had it mailed to us in Chicago. Can't say that I remember anything specific about it though. Do they deliver or are you picking it up at the newstand?

That's funny. When I first ready your message, I wondered what "Goup State" was...then it registered.
Yes, that is their website. I'm picking it up at the local gas station. I don't know what their delivery range is.
It's not a GREAT paper, but it beats the Greenville News...for half the price.

Ah I see! I was all over their website when we were in Chicago. At the time we were moving to Boiling Springs but we changed our minds at the last minute. Of course, neither can compare to Chicago newspapers, but we expected that! I'm considering having a Chicago paper mailed here.

Yes. I'm used to a metropolitan paper (Cleveland) as well, so it's an adjustment to have a small town paper as the only choice.
You can also purchase the Charlotte Observer in Greenville and Spartanburg counties at Publix and QuikTrip. More substantial paper and still .75. And good SC political coverage due to same owners as Columbia State paper, and they share reporters and bureaus. But a bit more left leaning editorially, although conservative columnists are also featured.
I have a friend from there that disagrees, so do I. I've been there. Yuck
You've only been to Cleveland. I've LIVED in both Cleveland and Greenville. I'll take Cleveland ANY DAY!!!! Yuck is putting it mildly to this backward area. I'm glad to be moving back to Ohio in July.
