What are some of your favorite one of a kind, not pricey places to eat in the upstate? I'm not talking chains, although there are probably some exceptions to that, and I'm not talking dressy. I'm talking about really good mom and pop type places that might have great burgers, chicken, mexican etc. I mean, I spent a lot of time at my daughters in TN and we found a favorite meat and three, is there a good one here? Is there a great place to go for a good family meal, or even great take out? I love hole in the wall places that don't have cookie cutter interiors. What places in the upstate fit the bill with what I have laid out above?

TIA

Check out Wingate in Simpsonville on Main Street. Excellent Meat and Three. Also thumbs up for Henry's Smoke house 1 block down the road. Succulent smoked ribs. MMMMmmm.

Tommy's Country Ham House on Rutherford Street on the fringe of downtown is your place. It has become somewhat of a Greenville institution. It is almost always packed, and you'll see everyone from Greenville's VIPs to everyday blue collar workers eating there - truly an interesting mix you won't see many other places around the city.

Also try Stax's Omega, on Orchard Park Drive near Haywood Mall, and Gene's, on Buncombe in the downtown area. Both are good, local places you will like.

I also like Mary Beth's Restaurant, which is located downtown at McBee Station. It is a newcomer to town, but their breakfast is really good and the staff is always pleasant. It's not a "hole in the wall" type of place you are talking about, but it is local and I think it's a good place to relax and eat.

Please post your reviews here after you have tried any or all of these!

It may be awhile before I try most of these as I haven't been here long enough to know a ton of people and I hate eating alone. When my kids visit though, I will try them for sure. I'm glad to hear about the meat and three in Simpsonville and I will try the Henry's there as well.

I've wondered about Cataran's, but assumed that the food was bland because I always see old people out front, I know Moto doesn't fall into that category and my sil loves buffets, so we will give it a try when they visit.

I've actually wondered about Gene's. Tommys I have not heard of, but sounds good!

It's kind of like a blast from the past, but Southern Thymes on Trade Street in downtown Greer is quite reasonable and has some real down-home type cooking. They're only open for breakfast and lunch and have always been packed when I've gone. Really tasty! Only been there for lunch, but I simply must go back and try breakfast real soon.

Anyone know if Southern Thymes is the cafe which was formerly called, "Louise's New South," or something similar? If so, I agree that it is/was great. Louise was a great old lady who could remember everyone by name after only one visit.

I am glad to see that Cateran Lodge has been mentioned. It is a consistently satisfying little homestyle buffet restaurant.

Although I haven't eaten at a real "down home" meat & three in years (mostly cook at home now), I do have a few recommendations worth checking out.

Greenville:
  • Gus's Streetside Cafe - On the westside (S.C. 81), near Carolina High School
  • Fried Green Tomatoes - Congaree Road, behind Haywood Mall
  • Cateran Lodge - Wade Hampton Blvd., near BJU
  • Gene's - accross from Hughes Main Library, in downtown
  • Tommy's Country Ham House - near Heritage Green and downtown

Easley:
  • Jimmy's Family Restaurant - U.S. 123, next to the split off with S.C. 93
  • Joe's - Main Street, downtown

Pickens:
  • Michael's - Main Street, downtown

Liberty:
  • Dan Scott's Big League Barbeque - Commerce Street, downtown

Realizing that there are probably lots of additional places to include, I will try to contribute more options in the future. So far, this entire thread provides a fairly decent list.

Great, thanks guys! I totally forgot that my brother and sil are probably going to visit in the next week or so, so hopefully I can check out one or two of these places while they are here.

When my brother and sil were visiting last week we were going to go to Gene's but it was closed so we went to Henry's Smokehouse. My brother loved it. I think he would have been happy to eat just the sweet potato casserole though!

We went to the Ham House, and to be honest, I wasn't impressed. I doubt I will go there again. Service was good though.
