To be "direct" a flight has to first stop in one of the 5 "non-stop" cities.

Whatever the case...it sounds like good news to me!
I had to drive to Charlotte Airport in September for my Boston trip so this is a big PLUS!

Im glad your getting SW service, but really make sure when you book a flight you understand your itinerary. I booked a flight recently on SW from Portland to Providence with a plane change at Chicago Midway. The itinerary stated Nonstop to Chicago and then nonstop to Providence. For whatever the reason that flight decided to stop in Denver on the way to Chicago. The flight Chicago to Providence was routed thru Baltimore. This was not listed on the itinerary, and I was not aware of this until I went to the Portland airport the morning of the flight. The trip wasn't any better on the way back, and really was a very long tiresome way to fly such a long distance. The ticket actually was no cheaper than on the othe airlines. I will stick with the other airlines for cross country flights now. The passengers in my seating area on the flight said they had no idea of this routing either. I ended up finding out a passenger is charged an added fee everytime that flight stops enroute or there is a plane change. A ticket on SW for a long trip could very well cost more, than a non stop or hub change on the other airlines because of all these stop fees.
I think SW is a good airline and I wouldn't hesitate to fly them again but only on short routes. Such as Portland to Oakland or Denver. I admit I liked them better some years back, but I would never take them on a cross country flight again. I think at least in some areas of the country, a flight on them that says direct could in fact be a puddle jumper and the passenger pays the fees. Yes I think I prefer them on shorter flights, when there is a lesser chance of multiple landings in route. Also the term direct and non stop can be confusing to many people. In my case though the flights were definitely listed as being non stop but were actually direct flights.
Enjoy SW your very lucky they decided to serve Greenville, as many cities that want them never get them. Just make sure you completely understand SW. I think even when booking online which most of us do now, to call the airline directly and make sure of the routing of these flights before purchasing a ticket.

As far as I know the GSP to BOS flights are not starting until March of next year. Is that correct? Sure better than driving to CLT for a direct. Now why doesn't Asheville get on the ball and do a direct to Boston. Beats me.

Those 'stop fees' are still substantially less than the baggage fees and 'stop fees' on the other major carriers, plus you don't have to worry about SWA switching aircraft on you.

Southwest's first flights to/from GSP will begin 3/13/11. Remember, the only cities we will have nonstop flights from will be Baltimore, Chicago/Midway, Houston, Nashville & Orlando.
Las Vegas and Boston are onward extensions of some of those nonstops.

Dang it. It is difficult to get to New England from this area. When I fly out of CLT to PVD or BOS, the flights are always full or overbooked; and vice versa. Go figure. No fun driving down to CLT and back in the winter; CLT airport (and USAir) are notorious for late flights, cancelling flights, or the best one: plane on ground, no crew to fly it. Duh !
