Big Greenville News article on this today. The City of Greenville beat out Chicago and Portland for this pilot project mainly because we showed a lot more interest in it: http://www.greenvilleonline.com/asse...S171038227.PDF Some of the things the city could see from this include expanded electric car fleets, hybrid water heaters for residents, LED street lights and downtown upgrades like to office buildings. General Electric is not asking for any money to help pay for it either. Incredible to see a major company like this investing in our community. Duke Energy, Furman University, Ameresco, and Clemson University are also involved. Now I wonder what NewYorkBorn has to say?

Oh and one of my favorite quotes from the article:

White said GE is essentially doing research and development in Greenville as part of a wider attempt to expand the use of its energy-saving products and projects. He referred to the company’s “ecomagination” commercials and said the project involves the top levels of the company.

It's almost like being Google's test dummy for their Fiber project except in this case it's GE for their Ecomagination project.

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking when I started reading. I've been thinking for years that Greenville should be trading on its name and emphasize the "Green" part to companies and people looking to relocate... We could be on the verge of becoming a leading-edge city in "green" energy & alternative fuels/propulsion.

If we're chosen as one of Google's Fiber cities, you can add tech to that as well!

"Also discussed this week was a pilot project to change out some Main Street street lights with LED fixtures — GE makes several types — that Swann said could operate anywhere from 20 percent to 90 percent more efficiently while offering less shadowy, more controllable lighting.".... Hope this doesn't tick off hometown company Hubble Lighting. Heck, maybe they can involve Hubble as the project moves forward!

Don't be mislead. The American Taxpayers will be paying for it. President Obama I'm sure has given Ben Bernanke the go ahead to print up more $$ for all of the BIG corporations that don't need it to develop energy efficient products which, like the Toyota Prius cost multiple times more to produce than it saves in gas.

We'll all be paying for it as we pay higher prices for food, energy, clothes and gas. The entire nation of taxpayers will pay as GE will be laughing all the way to the bank.

BTW stay AWAY from those squiggly tube lightbulbs "the energy efficient" ones as they not only are expensive; give off and ugly white light but they containt MERCURY and if one breaks, you practically have to evacuate your house and call in a hasmat team to clean up the toxic mess in your house!

Not doomed UB, but let's be more realistic about GE's motives. Nothing is free.....

Look at it this way: it's a given that the project has been funded by the government, and acknowledging that, why not be excited that it's going to be in Greenville instead of another city?

If you're going to claim that then you might as well say not to celebrate anything that any company does ever, because they always have ulterior motives.

That's not always the case...but some companies like to pretend that their "goodwill" comes from their bottom line.

But if TARP funds (being funneled through GE) are being used here instead of another city, I suppose that is a good thing.

I honestly don't care if GE has an "ulterior motive" or not - if it does good things for people and our metro area, I'm all for it!
