I really wish they would put a Popeyes in Greenville. The Charlotte area locations are Concord Mills food court, and Winthrop Univ food court in Rock Hill. Columbia and Atlanta areas have freestanding locations, as well as Charleston and eastern NC. And it would be nice if Hardee's would bring back their very good fried chicken. But it was added during the time of the Roy Rogers merger, and Carl's Jr. discontinued it when they took over. A few franchises in Virginia still offer it, as they are near the area where some Roy Rogers still remain. And it would be nice if Roy Rogers could expand down here, but I think we stand a better chance of getting a Popeyes. Maybe that will eventually happen. I prefer Popeyes over Bojangles.

Always wondered what happened to Roy Rogers, it was our go to place when we'd drive down to Disneyland when I was a kid.

I don't eat at too many fried hickey places but Popeys did have the best biscuits I ever remember eating from a fast food place. Like how mcD has the best fries occasionally.

I ate Roy Rogers chicken in Washington DC on a school field trip when I was a kid. Thought it was great. Some years later Hardees started serving the same chicken. The post about the merger explains why. I ate Popeyes in Greenwood twice a week when I was working in the radio business there. I think I cried when it closed. I hit Popeyes in Pigeon Forge near the Wally world when I'm up that way for a car show or the like but I'm not driving to the ATL for Popeyes.....Not when Gladys Knight's Chicken and Waffles is right behind the Varsity. Finger lickin'! There are still some locally owned chicken shacks that are better than the chain selection we have in the upstate. Miss Ann's Fried Chicken in Greenwood, Whiteford's in Laurens and Clinton come to mind.
Best chicken and fish I ever ate in the upstate was from the long defunct Roddy's chain. The Pelzer location hung on for a long time and I miss it like crazy.

I had Roy Rogers in DC when I was there for Presidential Classroom in Feb of '82. Was good, and liked that I got to eat there when we didn't have anything like it back home, but the most memorable thing that happened was when a fellow PC-er from the upper Midwest was stepping back onto our bus after lunch and a pigeon eliminated on him! He said, "Sh*t!", which I thought was quite appropriate! lol

Roy Rogers also has a very good roast beef sandwich, sliced fresh and dipped in au jus sauce. And you can also add horseradish or barbeque sauce from the fixins bar. Better than Arby's. Plus good burgers also, and the previously mentioned fried chicken.

Interesting! Used to work near there & went for lunch fairly often. LOVED their custard pie and turkey & dressing! Even ordered a platter(?) of the dressing one year for a family Thanksgiving get-together!

So no Popeyes here? Where do people go for Cajun-y type food then around here?

Closest you'll get is Bojangles. It's....so-so in my opinion but better than the blandness of KFC and Churchs. For real cajun, "Chops" is in a shopping center on Pelham Rd. and they import all kinds of stuff from the bayou. They have a deli and you can get gumbo, duck, etc. to take home and reheat/cook. It's been a while but I think they are still open. I have been told to go to Ford's Oyster Bar downtown and try their cajun menu but haven't been.
Honestly, the gumbo is good in a lot of places including Memphis but for true coon*** cookin' you got to follow the delta and the closer you get to where the river dumps out, the better the food.

I dunno, maybe it's a quality/consistency thing, but I don't find the Popeye's here around Houston to be any better than I remember Bojangle's being. Lots of people like to slam Bojangle's, but I liked them and sorta-kinda miss them.

IMO, best fried chicken in the Upstate is Lee's. There used to be several locations around Greenville and Anderson, but the only one left that I know of is in Spartanburg. Worth a stop if you're in that part of the Upstate.
