A friend of ours keeps encouraging us to move to Greenville, and says he'll never move back to So Cal. I like what he says and the images I have seen of Greenville are beautiful. Is there work for electricians and the healthcare field?
We would have to do a blind move so please tell me as much as I would need to know about the area.
Thanks.
Nobody is building anything right now?? I have to disagree with that. There is a great deal of residential construction going on to accommodate all the newcomers, as well as a lot of commercial development everywhere you look. A new hospital is under construction on the Millennium Campus. I agree that you should have jobs lined up before moving here, though.

I agree. There is a ton of construction going on in Greenville right now.
Being in banking, I can attest to the fact there is a lot of new construction going on right now, in commercial and residential. There are jobs to be had for a good electrician. However, there are still hiring issues. The next statement is not political at all, so don't try to read anything into what I am hearing from small business owners, including builders and developers. They are not in the market to hire right now because of issues concerning health insurance costs and taxes. They need to hire but are holding off. Hopefully, that will change once the politicians (on both sides) get their acts together.
Thanks for all the replies. I am looking for a decent affordable place to raise a family with, 4 seasons, and to be able to see trees, hike, camp, bike. My favorites so far are St. Louis, Mo, Indy, IN, and here. I am loosely considering Dallas, TX and Oregon. Oregon may be too much like CA in some ways though.
While our cost of living may be cheap, our unemployment is high. I don't recommend blind moves into Greenville, though qualified folks with good references can usually get traction alright. Don't expect to be compensated nearly as well relatively though.
I would choose Greenville over any of the other places on your list, with the possible exception of Oregon (it's GORGEOUS there!). Dallas can't come close to Greenville as far as climate and geography are concerned. The winters in St Louis and Indy would be tough to take coming from So Cal, whereas Greenville's winters are generally mild with only a little bit of snow/ice every year.
I would never blind move somewhere. It seems you have a family to worry about too. You at least need to visit for minimum of a long weekend. Honestly the Greenville board trys to make Greenville out to be nothing but sunshine and daisies, and well, it's not. You are the only one who can truly decide if its right for you not a bunch of random people on a fourm. You need to o your own reaserch on things that matter to you, not ask for people to tell you.
As for jobs, healthcare will be ok but pay will be less. Electrician will be much less pay and hard to find a job. Last I checked the unemployment was still 9.1%.

Definitely check out pay for electricians before moving. Pay is not great in Greenville, even compared to other places in the Southeast. I work in development/construction.
