I'm having a terrible time trying to choose a beginning martial arts class for my 4 year old. He's interested, but I know nothing about martial arts and how to choose the right school for him. I think I'm most concerned about the environment and safety, but I'm sure there are other things I should be looking for. There seem to be so many options around that I'm overwhelmed.
I'm not interested in training the next black belt expert, but of course if he chooses to continue, I don't want to have started him off on the wrong path. I'd like to see him have fun mostly and channel this fighting/wrestling affinity he has in a healthy direction.
Can anyone give me any recommendations about schools in the Greer/Taylors/Greenville area that work well with young children?
The problem is not the martial arts but the continuing costs. Most teach but are primarily to make money.
Check out Taekwondo. There are many centers in Greenville
Tell me more specifically where you live and I'd be glad to help you out with a recommendation. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to martial arts instruction, so I'd be glad to point you in the right direction.
Anyplace downtown to eastside of Greenville, Taylors, Mauldin, Greer would be fine. I'm more interested in the right environment than convenience. (hah - given I'm not sure what that "environment" might be!) I wonder if there's a class that doesn't even bother with the belts at his age? lol... I'm getting that the belt thing is a big deal and many schools test/charge fees to advance.
My son is young, so I just want him to have fun. While I encourage him to do his best at all activities, I don't think we'd be happy at a school that is just interested in getting another color belt.
He will be in cubs ( until age 5) and then junior until age 15.
Unfortunately even the cub Taekwondo students do belt testing every 2 months. Testing fees is a major source of income for them as are monthly fees ( around $92-100) per month.
We had an excellent experience with Master Kim's World Class Taekwondo (Woodruff Road). It was the only (and I mean ONLY) place our "troubled" child would focus, have respect, and work hard. It made big --positive --changes to the kid. Cannot say enough good things about that program and the Kim family.
Whoops, sorry I didn't respond sooner! I thought I'd be notified of a response to this thread but I wasn't....
However, since I'm so late now, I'll just second the above recommendation of Master Kim. I knew a family who went there and they really liked it too.
