I'm looking for some feedback on Greer Middle College which is a Greenville County charter high school on the Greer campus of Greenville Tech. I know that it is a lottery-based admission and that students can take college-level courses. It's also my understanding that the school is currently in portables with a large, central deck that connects them.
Here are items I'm seeking info on:
teacher quality
student body - what types of students are attracted to this school and apply for the lottery? Why are they choosing this school?
How do universities view a diploma from these Greenville Tech Charter schools? Are they considered competitive high schools?
facilities - the school says they have designated land and completed designs for a school building but I'm curious about timetable for a permanent building
There are a couple of similar threads about this. My daughter goes to the Braisher Middle College (BMC) which is a sister charter school to Greer. There are three in our area, all associated with Greenville Tech.
BMC is on Greenville Tech's Braisher Campus in Simpsonville.
As for BMC, it is a great school, led by a great administration. I do believe the teacher quality is higher than some schools, but I'm not sure if they need a special qualification to teach there. The curriculum is tougher. Starting in the sophomore year, students can take two college classes a semester. A Senior project has to be completed to graduate. It is a very big deal and actually starts in the Sophomore year.
Students that win the lottery don't realize how tough the school is and usually drop out fairly early. I think that is good, that it allows students who actually want to be there. Also I think they need to have a B or higher average to stay in the school.
Over 90% of the graduating classes go on to college, most with scholarships of some sort.
Can't answer all the questions about Greer, but I would say they are fairly similar to BMC. Hopefully a parent of a Greer student will chime in.
