I like the way Fox21 used the Palmetto tree in their graphic. I am sure Fox 21 got a new set just a couple of years ago before 4 and 7.
WYFF and WLOS bill their news as "WYFF News 4" and "WLOS News 13". WLOS has decreased usage of "Western North Carolina's News Leader" as they began covering South Carolina more and other stations are covering western North Carolina more.

WHNS needs a major overhaul. Adding midday and evening newscasts from 1200 hours to 1300 hours (12 pm to 1 pm) and 1700 hours (5 pm) to 1900 hours (7 pm) is a leap forward. WAGA Fox 5 Atlanta does a great job with its noon and evening newscasts. WHNS restarted its sports department.

WJZY is billed as FOX-46 Carolinas. But their news is labeled My FOX Carolinas. WCNC is now called NBC Charlotte rather than Channel 36. But certain stations are well known by their legacy branding including channel number and call letters. Such as WYFF-4, WBTV-3, and WSOC-9. I use an antenna to view both the GSP and Charlotte channels.

I do think that foxcarolina should switch to HD and add a noon newscast. They do have 10pm AND 11pm which is why I think they avoid a noon newscast.

WLOS also has news from 2200 hours (10 pm) to 2330 hours (11:30 pm) and has a midday newscast for an entire hour (1200 hours to 1300 hours/12 pm to 1 pm).

WHNS has short lived evening newscasts. Circa 2000, there was a 30-minute newscast from 1600 hours (4 pm) to 1630 hours (4:30 pm) anchored by Connie LeGrand. It was way ahead of its time and received little viewership. The newscast shifted to 1700 hours (5 pm) and 1730 hours (5:30 pm). Not having more time for an evening news as other stations had 90-minute blocks doomed the newscast.

In 2009, WHNS got back into the evening news with a 30-minute newscast from 1830 hours (6:30 pm) to 1900 hours (7 pm). This newscast was shifted to 2300 hours (11 pm) to 2330 hours (11:30 pm) in 2012 to focus on late night news.

WHNS should try the evening newscasts again with similar times the three successful competitors have. A contingent two-hour newscast from 1700 hours (5 pm) to 1900 hours (7 pm) can work. Additions to the news team may be necessary.

Here is the breakdown of the amount of time spent on local newscasts for each station:
WSPA (+WYCW): 7.5 hours
WLOS (+WMYA): 7 hours
WYFF: 6 hours
WHNS: 5.5 hours

WLOS and WYFF have morning newscasts from 0430 hours (4:30 am) to 0700 hours (7 am). WSPA and WHNS' morning newscasts are from 0500 hours (5 am) to 0900 hours (9 am).

WSPA, WLOS and WYFF have midday news from 1200 hours (12 pm) to 1230 hours (12:30 pm.) Only WLOS continues their midday newscast for an entire hour to 1300 hours (1 pm).

WSPA, WLOS and WYFF have evening newscasts from 1700 hours (5 pm) to 1830 hours (6:30 pm). WLOS continues with a contingent two hour block with a newscast from 1830 hours (6:30 pm) to 1900 hours (7 pm). WSPA has a newscast from 1900 hours (7 pm) to 1930 hours (7:30 pm).

WLOS and WHNS have late night newscasts for 90 contingent minutes from 2200 hours (10 pm) to 2330 hours (11:30 pm). WSPA has two non-contingent newscasts for 60 minutes from 2200 hours (10 pm) to 2230 hours (10:30 pm) and from 2300 hours (11 pm) to 2330 pm (11:30 pm). WYFF is from 2300 hours (11 pm) to 2330 hours (11:30 pm).

Back to the original topic. I have been receiving a stronger signal from WSPA-7 since about last Wednesday. Perhaps they have corrected some technical issues and returned to full power.

I think WBTV 3 needs a new set and graphics. There set is starting to look a little worn and their graphics and music a little dated. Anyone know of any updates coming soon for them?

Regarding WBTV, I think their set looks nice, but you are correct it is about time for an update. However, I like their graphics as they are discreet and minimally invasive as compared to other stations. I can't stand it when stations have large and obnoxious graphics, and annoying scrolls. And as a flagship station for Raycom, I am sure they will eventually upgrade to a new set for WBTV.

I agree on the graphics....not too bad. Some of the other local stations are definitely worse. Not a big fan of the fairly new WSOC set either. It looked dated from the beginning to me.

The WSOC set is similar to all of the Cox stations which use a big scenic skyline backdrop. WSB in Atlanta and WFVT in Orlando have the same design. And I think they all look nice. However, I always thought the former newsroom set that WSOC used for years was functional and professional.
