I'll be moving to the historical Pinckney district of Greenville fairly soon. Can anyone offer me any insight? It appears that the northwest side is still pretty shady. I'm concerned about leaving my spouse at home and the foot traffic, perhaps someone knows better.

From what I know and read the crime rate is lower there than in Greenville as a whole. Are you purchasing an historic home?

The vast majority of the foot traffic is not a threat. Of course crime could occur at any time and don't expect to be able to leave the doors unlocked, but I wouldn't consider it an imminent threat. I knew someone who lived there and it was reasonably safe a few years ago.

To get a better feel, check the Greenville City crime map - zoom into the Pickney historic district and set the date range to include the last year. I just checked reports in surrounding area and the number of incidents seems reasonable.

The Hampton-Pinckney District from Lloyd Street to Butler Avenue is very nice. Anything northwest of Lloyd Street will be in some form of renewal.

Yes, I'll be northwest. I am not purchasing a historic home, but I will be renting. I was surprised to see relatively low crime incidents on RAIDSOnline. I like the area but I'm wondering what amenities are nearby. Gym? Grocery store? Any help with that?

I've lived here almost 8 years and am not familiar with this area. Can anyone tell me exactly where it is? Thanks

Not far from the Heritage Green museums and Main library

Hampton - Pinkney Historic District

The south end of Pinkney St in particular has some beautiful old homes. (They're quite a handful to keep looking as good as they do).

FWIW, there have been car break-ins on my block here in Greenville that do not show up on that map. A string of stores was broken into on Augusta Rd a few years ago, and those crimes do not show up on that map (yes, I looked for every year). Not sure what's going on with that.

But it looks like there was a car-jacking and strong-armed robbery right there on Pinkney or the next block over last year. Those aren't property crimes. Just keep your wits about you.

For supermarkets, you have Publix #1148, McBee Station, 400 East McBee Avenue Suite 100, Greenville, South Carolina 29601-2940; and Ingle's Markets #69, Cherrydale Point, 1500 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, South Carolina 29609-2929.

For a fitness center, Gold's Gym, Cherrydale Point, 3245 North Pleasantburg Drive, Greenville, South Carolina 29609-2900, is on the other side of Ingle's.

Thank you! Hopefully that new dialysis center won't be a problem.
