We'd like to take the kids somewhere with snow during Christmas break. Where's the closest place to Greenville which will almost certainly or at least usually have natural (not man-made) snow then? What about a good place to go sledding?
Does Pisgah usually/always have snow accumulated on the ground over the winter? If Pisgah/Mitchel are closed it would be due to snow, right? So there should be a hill somewhere between here and there which has snow and is accessible, right?
Last Christmas it was in the mid 70's here so we drove up into the mountains to "cool off."
It was in the mid 60's up there with no snow.
It was actually a bit muggy and misting, I think the low was still in the 50's in the mountains on Christmas. You could have worn shorts and a light jacket.
You have to keep in mind that white Christmases are rare, even in far more northern spots like Pennsylvania, Upstate, NY, and New England. A lot of ski resorts don't even open until January. You may get lucky, but for guaranteed snow? Try northern Canada.
However, as others have said, the mountain peaks of NC are likely to have snow on them, but access would likely be an issue
The only two spots that *might* have natural snow would be either Mt. Mitchell or Grandfather mt. The most likely place you'll be able to get access to is Grandfather as anything else is subject to the parkway being open and if it flurries they close it. But this is all a very very unlikely chance. We don't tend to get more then flurries until January. Any real snow will close all the roads down so you won't be able to get there anyway.
Why are you against man made snow? There are plenty of kid friendly tubing places that your kids would enjoy.
