Which high-end restaurants are doing good business right now? Most to all have lost business over the past year.
You're right, they are all doing horrible business and are barely able to keep their doors open. Greenville just can't support higher-end restaurants, due to the small population (56,000) and the fact that nobody in the entire area is making a decent living anymore.
If you didn't know, all of that was extremely sarcastic. In all seriousness, the higher-end places we're talking about downtown (Devereaux's, High Cotton, Soby's, Rick Erwin's, Ristaurante Bergamo, Trattoria Giorgio, etc.) do good business on the weekends and before shows at the downtown theaters. They also get faithful business from business travelers and from local businesses holding business meetings there/entertaining out-of-town clients. Don't forget about large group functions, either. I'm not suggesting that they are packed every night of the week, but they certainly do their share of business. There is a market for them, and they are well supported. For a mid-sized metro area that isn't tourist-driven, Greenville has a great selection of high-end restaurants.
High Cotton was packed a couple of weekends ago when I was in town. Soby's was too. And I ate at Devereaux's earlier this year and they were doing really good business as well. Again, I am sure you can go into any of these places at certain times and find them doing modest business. But it is ridiculous to suggest that this "horrible economy" is causing all of them to struggle. Restaurant O had problems to begin with, and the perception that their food was not worth the prices they were charging was prevalent long before any of the economy talk even started. Stop falling for the media's sensationalism about the economy. It obviously has its problems right now, but most people aren't losing their jobs and having their homes forclosed.
I have this unwarranted hunch that perhaps the Restaurant O closure and new concept reopening there may have something to do with Tyler Florence's plan to open a restaurant in Greenville. The end of this article in G Magazine seems to allude to such a possibility.

There are quite a few places to get an excellent steak!

-O (Main St, if you haven't been yet you should...it's closing at the end of the year.)
-Chophouse '47 (Pelham Rd)
-Charlie's (downtown on Coffee St)
The soon-to-be best place to get a steak is Ruth's Chris. Not sure when it's supposed to open, but I can't wait.
I called the Crowne Plaza this week to see if it had opened and they told me Ruth's Chris would open on February 20th. I can't believe they are missing the Valentine's business but I'm sure we will be there within a day or two of opening day.
I really hope the Ruth's Chris will be visible enough there at the Crowne Plaza to do enough business. I realize that there is a lot of traffic on Roper Mountain Road, but I wonder if many people will know it is there (perhaps effective signage will help).
To be honest, I would have expected them to locate downtown or on Woodruff Road before choosing the current site..
I think the Crowne Plaza is a perfect spot if they did not intend to have a free-standing structure. Maybe they will have room-service for the hotel too?
Definitely Cornbread to Caviar @ 221 North Main Street across from the Hyatt Hotel. If you havent tried this place you must it is the best the new restaurant in downtown greenville and the steaks are to die for!!!!
My hubby and I went to Chophouse 47 for the first time on Saturday - celebrating our purchase of a townhome on Friday (YAY!!!! We're puttting down roots). One of the best steaks I have ever had.
When I first read the menu, I thought it was somewhat pricey. However, our waiter helpfully suggested (in a very non-condescending manner) that salads and side items were large enough to split, so we did. And my $6 glass of wine (least expensive on the menu) was more than palatable.
