Anyone ever get a ticket in SC? I just got a big one $445. 82 in a 55. Damnit. I am supposed to show up at some place in Greer if I want to challenge it. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Or at least getting one reduced? THANKS.
wow 27 mph over in a 55mph. Im assuming this was on Highway 25 a bit north of TR? Was the cop camping out and shooting radar or did he just see you flying? if so can you give some details on the spot the cop was sitting . $445 is HUGE for a speeding ticket, I bet he's already met his quota for the month, lol
My initial reaction was to say that there is probably no point challenging a ticket for going that much over the speed limit. However, I have been told that they will often reduce the fine and/or points simply because you took the time to show up in traffic court. I doubt they will let the entire amount slide, but showing up could save you something. The question is, is it worth your time and effort to see?
One time when I lived in DC, I was going 72 in a 55, and passed a cop (who was also driving). Yikes! He pulled me over, and I explained that I did not use that road much and was going to the airport to pick up a few friends. Amazingly enough I did not get a ticket. In fact, he did not even ask for my insurance! He just ran my license, walked back to my car, and said, "Keep it under control out there." Just goes to show you that you never know what they might be thinking.
I got a speeding ticket on my way back to Greenville from TN (in TN) and the officer wrote up the ticket with the amount to be paid clearly written on the ticket. I sent a personal check and got it back saying that I have to pay by money order and that, oh btw, the ticket actually is supposed to be for $50.00 more. I am going to send a mo for the original amount as it just doesn't sound right to me.
I think most would agree with furmanpals. why the hell were you going so fast, and you do deserve a stiff penalty for such excessive speed, I mean come on.....27mph over, maybe you should consider a NASCAR career or something...
from my experience, if you show up they'll usually reduce the fine but the points usually stick unless they change the charge. And i believe for as fast as you were going they can actually suspend your license, so you may have lucked out.
If I were you, I would show up on the court date, contrite, with cash in hand and hope they will reduce the fees and points. Showing up in court is probably the only way you will get any leniency.
Now if you really don't believe you were doing >25mph over the posted speed limit then I would be prepared to make a sound argument or hire an attorney. You can ask for it to go to trial.
I don't think you can 'buy it down' like you can in NC nor do I think you can do anything about it in advance.
