I have one small business which is taking some hits in this economy. I'm looking for other small business ideas to investigate. What have you guys done, seen or heard about (small start-ups) that is doing well in this economy and in this area? I am very much against food-service and I'd like to stay away from franchises, if possible. I currently own a public relations business targeting health care providers.

Hey guys....sorry my original post was not clear....I said AGAINST food service (restaurants and franchises). Sonrise, you weren't very nice. MYRC60, thank you for your input
A few come to mind that don't involve food; laundromat or a resale business. I'd bet resale will stay big for awhile after this recession ends. People got to wash clothes. I paid $4 for a triple load at the local laundromat just last week.
This is why I said WC; at 40 cents apiece (that's what they were last time I bought one) I'd be willing to bet they are not seeing a big downturn like some other businesses are right now. They are snack size and so yummy!
There is a woman on the MI boards who wanted to start a business and so sat down and thought about what is it that people cannot do without. She got into the water well drilling business and is doing quite well from what she says.

Seriously? Good Lord, you're sensitive. Did you not notice the smiley face? Lighten up Tinabean. Sheesh. Every article and all reports show that during economic downturns, fast food and qsr's (quick service restaurants) do really well, as does places like WalMart.
Hmmm... I really am going to have to re-think my fear of the food service biz. MYRC60 you reminded me of something. One of my friends parents made a FORTUNE with laundrymats in the Charleston SC area! This one is going at the top of my list to map out initial investment requirements and to find if there is any mapping program to help me assess best target areas for maximum return. Thanks..... And sorry if I was sensitive, Sonrise. I read what you wrote completely differently from how you intended. My apologies.

I haven't known anyone in the laundry biz but at $4/pop its got to be a money maker. Some people just can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars at once to buy the machines for their homes or don't have the hook-ups for it. I personally do mine at home and have only been in one once in 6 years. I would think if you targeted the right area you could mop up (no pun intended; lol) with this one. Most are unattended for many of the operational hours too.
I've worked in food and didn't enjoy it but if you brought the right product to the market you'd be a success but you'd probably be spending more time in the shop here.
Yeah, that's why I wanted to stay away from the food biz...too labor intensive and I don't have a background in it. I'm looking specifically for biz opps that will provide high return on investment with minimum management time on my part since I have another biz which is labor intensive on my part. This coin laundry thing is intriguing. I was raised by a very before-her-times mother who had her own biz and taught me that working for yourself is the most fulfilling path. I've worked for big corporations and have had my own biz and I much prefer the entrepreneurial approach, even with the risks and stress. I feel that as long as I work hard and ask for loads of advice, I can PLAN TO SUCCEED. Keep the feedback coming.....the wisest person is the one who seeks intelligent counsel before commiting to the plan of action.
