I'm looking for affordable options for my husband and I to get away for a few days. I was thinking of maybe taking a trip to somewhere within a four hour drive. I love the spa, we both like to swim, and we both like being able to explore a town and/or scenery. I'm in my mid-twenties, so I don't want anything too calm, but we really need a break.
Any ideas?

Thanks!!

I thought the point of a staycation was that you stayed at home and just did day trips to nearby areas.

Try Bryson City, NC. Beautiful scenery. Nantahala Outdoor Center is nearby , with kayaking, rafting, biking, hiking, etc. Nice retaurants if you would like to get away from from the chains. Cherokee is nearby. Several big lakes..... a little bit of everything.

My wife and I went to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN this past weekend. We had a great time! I would recommend it to anyone. There is great hiking, an aquarium, a water park and all sorts other stuff to do. Your are right next to Smokey Mtn National Park.

Without knowing what "affordable" means in this case...

My personal favorite weekend getaway or daytrip is Highlands, North Carolina. There are several great places for lodging, dining, and shopping, not to mention the absolutely spectacular scenery surrounding the village. Lots of hiking and waterfalls. My recommendation for your relaxing getaway is Old Edwards Inn & Spa. Across the street is another fantastic old place I would recommend, Highlands Inn.

If Highlands doesn't seem like a fit for you, I would definitely agree with the Pigeon Forge area recommendation. I am not a fan of the cheap tourist nature of the town, but its location near the breathtaking Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including gorgeous Cades Cove, makes a stay there worthwhile. There are also awesome caverns nearby.

Gatlinburg is a bit overcrowded,(tourist trap) my wife and I took our honeymoon on the other side of the mountains in Blue Ridge GA, visited some winery's, rented a boat one day and relaxed on the lake, went antiquing, tubing down the toccoa, horseback riding, a little less touristy, MUCH more relaxing!!

P.S. i'm 26 and my wife is 25, if that helps

Exactly, a "staycation" means you stay at home or in a hotel in your city and enjoy the local attractions. If you're driving two hours, that's a vacation!

Within four hours, my first and only choice would be charleston. Plenty of spas and swimming. A beautiful town for sightseeing and plenty of nightlife. And of course, great food. I'm just not a fan of myrtle north (aka gatlinburg/pigeon forge).

I was just going to post the exact same thing. Uh, people, a staycation means that you stay in your hometown and see the sights as a tourist would. We'd do museums at Heritage Square, Greenville Zoo, falls park, maybe a trip to one of the lakes, Roper Mtn, Paris Mtn, etc.
