I really don't like to be negative, but here's a fair warning...
Don't go on Saturday night unless you have a group of 10 or more. They don't take reservations for groups of less than 10.
We love the Peddler in Boone, NC and decided to try the one here recently. It was crazy busy on the Saturday night we went. If we hadn't been meeting friends whom we were treating, we would have left. What a time to leave the cell phone at home. The bar was so jammed that we couldn't even get drinks while we were waiting.
The food was excellent, but the atmosphere was wasted on us by the time we finally got a table.
That can be a problem at MANY restaurants in the area on Saturdays. Newer places probably are designed for "waiting", with larger bar areas, etc, which can make waiting for a table more pleasant. The Peddler is just too cozy for its own good!
My new favorite restaurant in the upstate is Cornbread to Caviar, which is on Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg. Great food and less expensive than many of the restaurants mentioned in Greenville.
The first time I visited Greenville, my family took me to The Peddler, and we sat in the "screen porch" room where it feel like you're in a tree house. Loved it and the food. Very cozy in the winter too. Great atmosphere. Go early to avoid a long wiat.

That's exactly where we ate when my parents came to visit last fall!
As others have said, we have a really good dining scene in Greenville. However, if I have to pick one favorite resaurant it would be High Cotton. Excellent food, great wine list, and amazing views overlooking the river.
Took the family to Handi downtown today for lunch. Fantastic indian food. Great ambiance. Did have the buffet - but this is no ordinary buffet - wonderful variety and fresh. My kids enjoyed it as well. Great addition to the downtown Greenville restaurant scene.

On our trip we ate at Handi as well. We had dinner and ate off of the menu not the buffet, but we definitely enjoyed our meal, as did my parents who were with us.
Might be cool if everyone lists 1 single place they would consider their favorite place to eat in the Greenville/upstate area. I know a lot of people have many favorites but if you could only pick a single place that you would recommend to someone coming from out of town for 1 evening, what would it be?
For me, I have to say I love Bellacinos in downtown Greenville more than any other restaurant in the area. My wife and I take out of towners there every single time we have visitors and we generally eat there at least weekly. The grinders and the pizza are both the best I've had out of anywhere I've lived (and that includes Alaska, Washington state, Kansas, Florida, and others).
So, anyone else? Would be nice to get a list of "top favorites" going. No listing more than 1, you have to choose your absolute favorite! Also it doesn't have to be a place local to Greenville, franchises are OK too.
That's good, because you're choice, Bellacinos, is a franchise. lol
