No it doesn't. If you can't load your firearm (in this case pistol or revolver) in less time than it takes to open your eyes, you aren't well qualified to have the thing in the first place.
There is no such thing as a gun being "on-duty" that is marketing terminology to create a coined term to sound impressive, nothing more.
If it takes you longer to load your gun than remove it from storage, even one that is magnetic or has finger or palm print readers or is just high on a shelf, it isn't going to make any difference, you are too slow to be any good to yourself or anyone else.
If you can't load your gun in the dark by feel in less time than it takes to get out of bed, you are too slow. If someone has their gun pointed at you and yours is not pointed at them, you are too slow and loaded or unloaded, you aren't making it unless they hesitate.
Yeah, we enthusiasts can load particularly a 1911 in a couple of seconds, but I doubt the OP can load a revolver in a couple of seconds. Beyond that it's just more "monkey motion" that I for one don't need if I wake up to the sound of an intruder.
Beyond that, particularly for a DA revolver, there is no real risk in leaving it loaded, in a house with 2 adults both qualified to handle it. KISS principle and all that.
But if you want to start with an empty pistol and loaded mag, or empty revolver and speedloader, go ahead, it's a free country.
My carry gun and my HD gun are loaded and chambered unless I am going to the range or cleaning them. The wife's carry and HD gun are loaded and chambered. The HD guns are in quick access bedside safes but they are open anytime we are here, locked only when no one is home.
The wife was nervous about carrying chambered (semi-auto) and while she was waiting for her permit I told her to carry unloaded around the house and see if the gun ever dry-fired. The gun has a cocked striker indicator so it's easy to tell.
If anyone has a gun that can fire by dropping, then it should not be considered as a carry or a HD gun, but a range gun. I follow the 4 gun safety rules very stringently, but I have dropped a gun. Which brings up another rule, never try and catch a dropped gun.
This isn't totally on topic with guns, but re home safety would your wife feel more secure if a home security alarm system were installed? The alarm would give enough notice that a potential intruder was present, enough time to get that gun. Also you are in a rural area and presumably isolated from close by neighbors and help.
I carry my 9mm or 40sw when I'm home. No worry about getting to the gun when the SHTF, I keep it on me. Even when you have visitors the safest place for the gun is on you. It's ready when you need it and protect the folks in your area.
Both my 9mm and my 40sw pistols are DAOs so it's safe to keep with a round in the pipe. Just squeeze the long trigger like a revolver.
my father raised 4 kids on his own. three boys that were not angels. that said we never touched a gun unless we asked. fights happened yet we never shot each other. lucky? a different time? bs. My son and other kids around me lived in my home under same rules. I think the secret was it was not hidden nor made such a voodoo item. they knew it killed things. they knew it was loaded. of course I did afew tricks like my dad to test them and keep them honest. I also made them feel responsible and in control of the guns safety.
My primary guns are always loaded - and treated as such.
Do this - put her in the bedroom with 6 EMPTY rounds or snap-cap cartridges - both the gun and the cartridges where she thinks she wants them. At SOME point (when she isn't waiting for it), go to the front door and open it, screaming like a banshee as you run into the room she's in. Was she able to load the gun and have it ready to go BEFORE you got to her?
You THINK it's going to be easy.....takes a LOT longer than you think - and for an even BETTER test, do it in the middle of the night. Just make ABSOLUTELY sure that there are NO live rounds ANYWHERE around when you do this test.
Have a feeling it's gonna be an eye-opener for her......
and more than likely a one way ticket to the couch for the next couple of nights for him if he tries it....
That is absolutely the biggest idiot I have ever seen. There is so many things wrong with what he did. He is a perfect example of who should be put on NICS list for "DO NOT ALLOW PURCHASE."
