I've seen gelatin tests of .22lr hollow points that clearly show that there is no expansion when fired from a pistol because there is not enough velocity/energy generated from a short barrel. On the other hand, they do expand well when fired from a rifle.
Why does everybody ASSUME? For some reason, people get it stuck in their head on what they want to hear and not what was said. The op said he wanted to carry a .22 and wanted suggestions on THAT gun. Everybody assumed he wanted to carry for protection from people. How do you know he doesn't want protection from snakes while out hiking, or dogs, or agressive gophers. How about, we just answer the OP's question instead of inventing what we want to hear?
Because OP did not specify what he was going to use it for, and because I've seen and heard people ask about carrying .22LR handguns for self-defense from other people, and it strikes me as a question that someone would ask about considering the hits C-D gets?
If it's for small animals, .22LR is fine. Not so much for anything larger than say, a large cat.

I have three but the Walther P22 is a very good gun. I have an 80s era 22/32 kit gun and a Ruger SS mark ll All are good but the Walther is small enough to carry and big enough to shoot at the range. If you just want a carry gun I would go with one of the NAA small 22lrs.
A 22 used in self-defense has been used successfully many many times.
I would not on a 22 for defense if the person were enraged, or strung out on drugs. Too often the only way to stop the threat is to stop the attacker by doing enough damage that they cannot continue. For me 9mm is the minimum caliber that should be considered, my preferred is .40S&W as it has the power (energy delivered to target) comparable to a 45ACP with the advantage of being able to carry more rounds in similar sized guns.
I have one of these in 22 short and 22 long rifle. They are great little guns. If small is your need this fits the bill. My short can go in a box of cigarettes and not know its there.
Those are collector's items, if I recall correctly.
I guess they are at that. They're still widely used for specific types of sport shooting here, and were issued to Norwegian police years and years ago. They're certainly suitable for personal carry at times
