My teen-age daughter is asking for a CHI straightener for Christmas. Because they are a little pricey, I would like some opinions on them. Also, how do you determine the width of the iron? 1"? 2"? She has fine hair that is shoulder length. Is it necessary to purchase the CHI styling products for maximum results? There are some varying opinion on Amazon about them wearing out really quickly. Any opinions will be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the Chi iron for 4 years now. It's not as hot as before but it still does a great job.I have medium thick hair and I use the 1 inch. I would get a 2 inch just because it will be faster to use...

No flat iron can compare to the Chi. They are awesome to straighten wavy hair, and worth every penny of the $150+ cost.

They're not as hot anymore because there was a mass-recalling of the Chi's when they had several reports filed on complaints of them burning down the houses they were in. Left unplugged and cooling, something within the Chi's instigated an electrical backfire/surge that was impossible to detect within the wiring of each of the houses, that started a fire while they were being used.

A lot of people I know have returned theirs since, and the company has an open policy on any Chis having been bought within the year of 2005 to be returned for a full refund. I worked at a hair salon when this all happened.

If they have since fixed them and are re-distrubuting, I don't think I would still risk it. Just my 2 cents

I've been using the Maxiglide (from Maxius), the one they show on TV. Around 2 yrs now.. It does a fine job, doesnt get as hot as it used to , but I'll stick with it anyway.. I paid around 70$ for it , and another 20-30 on styling products. I'm happy with it ! I'd like to try the Chi , but cant justify the dollars , atleast as of now with the Maxi doing a good job .

I heard the Chi is prone to breaking or malfunctioning after a few months. I did a lot of research before buying my flat iron and I think the Sedu is the best. I have also heard good things about Maxiglide and it is cheaper.

The smaller the width the easier it is to do tight curls. But I find it hard to curl my hair with a flat iron.

I'm a big fan of the Bed Head styling tools, especially the flat iron. It uses the same ceramic plates like a CHI and gives really great results. Also, it is much less expensive than the CHI and I think probably more appropriate for a teenage girl. As for size, I would go with 2" iron because it can straighten more hair at a time and get the job done faster.

I've had a CHI for three years and it's the best flat iron I've ever purchased. I have very thick, coarse hair and it works great. I bought mine on ebay and got it for half the price they sell it for in the store.

I have very thick, coarse hair and I paid $19.99 for a flat iron at Target and it works just fine. I only use it once in a while, though, not every day.
