Well, I'm going to be moving to Florida next year (Daytona Beach) and just needed to know what's the best way to care for hair that's in a beach/watery environment all year long? Thanks...
I'd start with a spray or gel-type substance that has an SPF in it (I just started using ION's swimmers leave-in conditioner [in a spray bottle] - and love it so far)

Why is it important to protect your hair from the sun?
Why is it important to protect your hair from the sun?
Same reasons as your skin. Applying products with an SPF to your scalp will help protect it (especially the area where the hair parts - very prone to burning, and very fragile/sensitive - I've gone to brush or shampoo my scalp enough times after it's burned [fair skin, and I burn after being in the sun for about 5 minutes - unless I've built up a tan] - to say that it HURTS. it really, really does). Also, if you're swimming, your hair will need the extra conditioners, since salt and chlorine are drying to hair, as well as the sun (is incredibly drying).

There are some reasons why you need to protect your hair.
1. Keeps your haircolor from fading too harshly.
2. Yes, you can get skin cancer on your scalp.
3. And keep your hair from getting to straggily (too shaggy also).
These do happen to your hair when you don't wear a hat or some sort of headwear to keep your head protect from the sun.
In addition to the good advise to use a product that contains SPF to protect your hair, also make sure that you make use of any provided shower facilities to rinse salt or chlorine out of your hair as soon as possible.
Well...I would say...WHO CARES! You are living by the beach!
I never did anything special but rinse sea water out of my hair right after surfing on the beach showers. I have always been a heavy conditioner addict though.
Depends on your hair type... mine is very fine and somewhat oily, after a week or two on the coast and in the ocean it feels GREAT! Saltwater and sun seem to actually give it some body and texture!
I've been living in north Florida since late 2005.
Unfortunately, I hate hats.
I do laps in a saltwater pool five mornings a week, and get to the beach regularly--was just there yesterday.
I wash my hair with Aussie, and condition it with Scruples Quickseal.
My stylist says I have *very* healthy hair.
I do think that salinity and humidity can be beneficial, my skin is certainly healthier since I left Colorado.
