Hello,
We are looking at the possibility of moving from Orlando (Celebration, to be exact) to VA Beach for a job. We currently live in a beautiful planned community ("new-urbanism") where we rent a condo for $1250/mo and are in a beautiful, safe, residential neighborhood. It would be me, my husband, and our 2 year old. We would probably want to rent a condo or house before we buy, since we are not familiar with the area. Are there any family-friendly, safe subdivisions or planned communities in VA Beach?

Thank you so much for your help.

There are a few here but not at the level I think you would be used to in Celebration. But for the most part the area is family friendly.

They're are lots of planned communities in Hampton Roads, most of the ones I know of are in Norfolk though and mixed/lower income. Not like Celebration. The only planned community, with the official tag of New Urbanism, I know of is East Beach in Norfolk. It's nice, but I don't know about schools and whatnot. Also, many people think the surrounding area, Ocean View, is not-so-great. I don't have a probably with it (I actually really like Ocean View), but lots dislike it.

Anyway, aside from planned communities in Norfolk, most subdivisions in Virginia Beach are on the safer, more family friendly side. The rule of thumb for new-comers in VB seems to be stay away from the Green Run and Bayside districts. They contain most of the rougher neighborhoods in the city. Do you have any specific spots you've looked at already?

Thank you so much for all of the information! I am originally from Newport News, but am very unfamiliar with the Southside. I do know that the position my husband is looking at would be near Oceania, if that helps any?

Can you tell me how much I would expect to pay to rent in a nice community in VA Beach?

Try looking in Kempsville. I'd stay away from Oceana because of the jet noise.
