They've heard some horror stories about military housing and are thinking of renting a SFH instead. Any suggestions of great areas for families? Zip codes? They will be trying to rent through realtor.com and militarybyowner.com but have no idea which areas are good and which ones to avoid. Thanks!

Norfolk Naval Base. Does anyone know about zip codes 23701 and 23707 In Portsmouth? How are the neighborhoods? Specifically Surrey Street (23707) and Jewell Avenue (23701)?

While I can't speak for those specific zip codes, Portsmouth in general is more blue collar, has more crime, much older homes, and worse schools than VB and Chesapeake. Sorry I'm not trying to offend anyone, there are some lovely areas of Portsmouth, i like the cute downtown, but it's definitely not the first place I steer people looking for a "great area for families." Plus you will have tunnel traffic for a commute. Can you give us a price range?

This is quite a generalization of the area and unfortunately it turns a lot of people off of the area, but you are right about the tunnel traffic.

Surry st neighborhood is very popular with young families and can provide good value homes. On the down side that side of portsmouth tends to flood easily and is near the areas that give portsmouth its reputation. The areas along rt 164, just north of the 2 zips you mentioned, are great areas. Check the 23703 area.
