Thanks acdcmonkey and Mr. Williamsburg!! Folks that are moving to the area, thinking about it, or already here are getting a real picture of the diversity of what is available to them. I love it.

I will add that I went to Downtown Va. Beach this past Saturday night and was pleasently surprised!! They had music playing in the square in front of the comedy club, and there were folks everywhere!! all the restaurants were packed and there was great activity. If you haven't done it, come out and try it. Very nice to see!!

I really enjoy living in Churchland.

Right in the middle of Hampton Roads - 30-40 min takes me to Va Beach or Williamsburg.
All the activities at Waterside
Water everywhere -
Sea gulls at the mall and sometimes you can smell the salt air
I can drive thru the city, suburbs and farmland within 15 minutes
People speak to you (in English)
Mild winters

As much as I hate living in HR, here's some of the good points:

Busch Gardens
$1 Parking at the Oceanfront during peak season
The free pier in Gloucester ((right across the Coleman bridge))
Laughing at tourists
All the nifty festivals

Man - that was a hard list to compile.

Kuharai, I am proud of you : ) You know, I believe that not every place is for every person. However, every place has something that is enjoyable, interesting, worth taking time to notice. And being positive is so much more pleasing than not. Thank you for contributing to this list.

Default Tidewater Is For Lovers

Shelly, thank you for the posting. I appreciate the positiveness it invites.
I am new to the Hampton Roads Forum. I have read quite a few messages since joining this morning.

I do have to admit that some of the postings about HR are quite negative. Opinions are a dime a dozen. I always say, to each his own. Choose what you like based on your desires and needs. If something does not interest you, move on and allow others to make decisions for themselves. I have learned that in order to make a decision, one must have
certain criteria in order to base that decision. Meaning, look at the pros and cons and weigh them according to your goals and plans.

When others ask: What is this like? What is that like? Don’t base your decisions on 1 person who obviously is unhappy and is venting. The answers are laced with emotions stemming from underlying issues that the individual has not been able to address.

I was born and raised in Suffolk. Right after graduating John Yeates HS, I immediately relocated to the Trenton, NJ-Philadelphia, PA area. I was 18 and wanted to get out of Suffolk. I was seeing the city for what is was at that time.

Now, I am older, wiser and a learned individual raising two children. I am relocating to HR (VB or Chesapeake) in June 2008. I am so looking forward to the move. I do not want to age in place in Philadelphia, where I currently live.

Why am I so anxious to get back to HR after being gone for 26 years? My personal preferences are mine; I would not push them on others. Living in Suffolk was not a happy time. However, there are many things I remember about HR that sooths my inner soul; something that is missing in an urban community.
The idea of not being hurried, common courtesy, a warm smile, serenity, no crowded subways, a secure place for a child to play, bus fare that is not 2.60 1 way with a .75 transfer… Need I go on?
There are some good things about Philadelphia. I just feel that I have worn out my welcome and it is time for me to come home.

Am I venting? OK I apologize. Shelly, to answer your question: I agree, Tidewater is for Lovers! Why…

Family: I have family in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. My mother is in a nursing home in Suffolk
Shopping: Lynnhaven Mall, MacArthur Center
Fun: Busch Gardens, Zoo, Beach
Education: Norfolk State University (I have a family member that teaches there); ODU, TCCC
Food: Any place that sells seafood and hush puppies.
Hey, what ever happened to Morrison’s Cafeteria, Po Folks! (Am I telling my age?

On last thing. Could someone please give me the heads up on areas in VB and Chesapeake for a townhouse – 3 bedrooms that has access to public transportation. My oldest son will transfer his college courses. And, he will take the bus - independence!

Anybody work for Sentara or Riverside MC?

Very good Stacylee, and add the rejuvinated downtowns of Portsmouth, Sufflok, Norfolk and the new created ones in VA Beach and Newport News. The latter are town centers and are very nice.

I just saw several new eateries on High Street here in downtown Portsmouth. Have to try them soon. Add all the nautical events such as the barnacle sailboat races on Friday evening, the tall ship (Schooner Race) that took place this past weekend to all the other posts and you will see this is a vibrant area.
