I know nothing about the area. My wife, two daughters (11 and 9) are considering a vacation in this area. Thoughts? Is the water warm enough to swim? How is the fishing? Type of fish? Crabbing? Would there be enough to do? After spending several days in DC we are looking to have a relaxing week. Maybe see some historical sights, swim, eat out etc.

Sorry that no one has provided information on Matthews County or Godfrey Bay. I'm in Hampton Roads (Virginia Beach) but I'm not familiar with either of these places.

Matthews County isn't really Hampton Roads, but I guess this forum would be as close as any. Plenty of fishing and crabbing up there. Flounder, Spot, Croaker, and Sea Bass to name a few and other sports type fish depending on season. Water will be plenty warm to swim any time June through September, maybe even part of October. There are a few marinas in the area and they host a lot of transient boaters in the summer. It's a stopping point between the upper bay and lower. Not a lot to do though outside of water recreation.

I went to High School in Mathews County. It's a sleepy but pretty little town -technically in the Northern Neck I believe. I can't advise on the fishing aspect but there are a couple of nice beaches and the courthouse area has some great little restaurants and shops. This is also a "blink and you'll miss it" area! However, Gwynn's Island is absolutely gorgeous as well as many other off the beaten path areas. If you like music there is always the historical Donk's Theater which provides a country music show on the weekends with popcorn and soda for sale. You also have Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg about an hour's drive away if you want to do a day trip. Mathews is fun to simply drive around and see all the great old houses - it's hard to get lost but the back roads can get a little bumpy!

We had a great vacation here! Very relaxing. Rented a beautiful cottage on the shore. Lots of swimming, crabbing and relaxing together. Great time.
