My hubby may have a job lined up at Langley. What areas around the airforce base are under a 30 min drive with great schools and low crime? Under the $350K price range for a home??? Can you point me in a good direction? My kids are 5 and 3 and are starting school. Main criteria is schools....

Two words..... York County. $350k will get you a nice home there and the school system is the best in Hampton Roads.

I will second the nomination of York County. Look at test scores and compare for yourself at SchoolMatters - Home (http://www.schoolmatters.com/ - broken link) Easy commute to Langley AFB, close to shopping and the rest of Hampton Roads as well.

We were stationed at Langley in lived in the Tabb section of Yorktown. It was less then 5 miles to work and the schools were fantastic. It is a great area!

I live about a mile from Langley AFB in TideMill Farms development in Hampton and I find it really peaceful. There are about four houses for sale in the developement. You may want to check it out.

Williamsburg is a great place as well. Friendly people, great schools, great parks, entertainment and dining.

I lived within 5 miles of Langley...the elementary school (where I previously worked) passed its state assessments all four years I worked there. I lived and worked in Hampton. Before I lived in Hampton, I lived in York County. The school facility was nicer but I can say that my chldren did well in both districts. Just like any other city or town across America, there are good and not so good points. It depends on what you are looking for. There are some areas of York County where it is very exclusive. There are some "country roads" and lots of suburbia and also areas of mobile homes. The same can be said about Hampton. Hampton does have more in the way of a "city" feel. There is a mall (under major redevelopment), more eateries and chain type restaurants in Hampton (like Panera, Ruby Tuesday, Bennigans, etc). Hampton has festivals, so does York County, Hampton has boutiques and small shops, as does York...again, it depends on what you are looking for. You CAN get a nice single family home with front and back yards, garage, on a quiet street in Hampton for 300+/-. And according to Alanboy, York County too. Both are on the Peninsula, so there is water, small beach areas, etc. If you look on a map you will see that they share a boarder so they are both convenient to Langley. As far as crime goes...I live in DC now, and I lived in York/Hampton for 15 years, I don't think I am the one to comment on that. It is all relative. I will say that I have never been a victim of crime. Someone did steal my daughter's car while she was in Newport News. When we lived in York County, my son left a birthday gift outside on the playground and it was taken. Other than that I have never personally been a victim of crime (Thank God). As a matter of fact, we didn't even have an alarm system on our Hampton house, as many people tend to have.
