Hi all! I am new here but I have lived in HR all my life. I recently applied for a job with the city of Hampton and was wondering how many of you work for the city of Hampton or any city in the area for that matter and if so, what was the hiring process like? How long did it take to get hired? What did you need to do? I had to go to city hall and take a typing test which I did immediately after I applied. They said it can take up to 45 days but I am anxiously awaiting. Any pointers/tips? heads up? Thanks for any help you can give me!

Around 45 days is just about right. Municipalities are slow moving vehicles. It takes a dozen people in government to do what 4 do in private industry. Also - I'm not sure about Hampton, but I do know that the City of Newport News has a hiring freeze on indefinitely.

Good luck.

Chesapeake & Virginia Beach has Hiring Freezes as well on all non-critical positions. Hampton may not even for little jobs like Admin Assistant. Probably need a typing test for that one though, and most require backgrounds checks which also takes time..

Thanks guys.. Norfolk and Hampton are both hiring. I applied for two admin. jobs in Hampton and had to take a typing test. I went downtown and took it the same day I applied. One of the jobs' status has changed from App received to under review by human resources which I assume is a good sign, but it's week 5 now and no word yet. They did say I would get an email if they were no longer interested, so I guess so far I am still in the running. A callback for an interview so I can make future plans would be nice, though... If anyone has had any experience getting a job with any of the local cities, I'd love to hear it Thanks again!

The City of Norfolk Admin Assistant or Technician (how fancy lol) position has just closed. Your status for that already says Under Review? or Application Received? Norfolk I don't think required a typing test either; just Hampton and Hampton said it had to be 45 WPM or better. Oh and the HPT one is only Part-Time with no benefits. How nice..

I applied for two jobs in Hampton at the end of May. Both are now closed so you cannot see them in their database any longer. Both said Application Received when I first applied, but one now says "Under Review by Human Resources" and they asked that you allow 4-6 weeks or 45 days. It's now week 5. I had to take a typing test, clocked in at 78 WPM with only one error. Each was salaried with benefits.. Just crossing my fingers and playing the waiting game right now I suppose...

Yes best of luck to you. I think the City is kind of pokey though as far getting back and letting you know their decision. I still see with mine in Hampton a few applications from September of 2007 and aside it, they either say "Under Review by Human Resources" or "Application Recieved"
And then Some from January of this year still say "Application Recieved" Like it was just received and then what happened? 7 months later and ???
So there is the waiting game for ya. I wonder like if they hired someone else and just fail to notify and not remove it from the "Application Status" or are they really that slow....

WOW.. that's pretty discouraging. The Hampton site insists they will let you know via email if you're no longer in the running for a job, and they emphasize that you should hear back within 45 days although they do stipulate it "can sometimes take longer". I just can't see why they'd post a job, take apps, then take so long to make a decision one way or the other. The least they can do is let you know you're no longer an option for them. May I ask what position you applied for? Seeing that your info. is in that status since 9/07 without a notice of any kind is a real downer..
