I am thinking it's about time to consider a rain barrel. I do a lot of landscaping and last year spent quite a bit of money watering the lawn, plantings, etc. Has anyone ever set one up? I found a few online but not really locally. Anyone have one and have suggestions?

What do you normally water, just the garden and flowers? How much do you normally use when you water?

I've used a small-scale rain barrel for years to catch rain water for my houseplants. Just love it. I have seen complex systems demonstrated on tv, so I'm thinking you should be able to find just about any size you need. You could probably make most of it yourself with hardware store parts.

(You might want to think about moving this thread to house or garden or something. Just a thought.)

Last year I had trouble keeping my lawn alive but I sowed some seed last fall. Hopefully it will do better this summer so I'm hoping to use less water. I actually found a rain barrel with an attachement that will pump out the water out of the barrel to use with a water hose but it cost about $300 for the barrel with the pump. Maybe just a plain rain barrel will suffice.

Oh yea, improvising is much cheaper and actually can be fun to do.
