Hi everyone. Well my husband is being transferred to a ship in Portsmouth VA next summer and I would like to find out more about the area. My main concern is what the schools are like in this area. My son has autism and right now he is in a public school here in FL in a very small prek class. I am very happy with this school and hate to have to move my son to a different school but I guess thats the military for ya. Anyway, Im wondering if I had to choose one of the areas , chesapeake, VA Beach, Portsmouth, etc, which one has the best public schools, especially for kids with special needs? Also, which is the nicest area to live in? I have been to VA beach before and it seemed decent but I really dont know much about it.. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks!

Jennifer

Hello. The best school districts in VB are Kempsville, and Cox. The best in Ches. are Hickory , and Great Bridge. The only decent district in Portsmouth is Churchland. Mainly it depends on your price range of homes, or rent.Much of the Hampton Roads area saw a huge jump in home prices in the past several years, pricing alot of people out of the good school districts. What price range are you looking for ?

I would include Western Branch in Chesapeake. Very good school.

That price range would probally put you in most areas previously listed, just depends on what you are looking for. A SFH 3br/2ba in VB or Ches in these school districts is around 1500/mth. In the Churchland area of Ptown around 1100-1200. To stay in your range and get the most for your money and good schools, the formentioned Western Branch area of Ches. would be good. Look somewhere around the Ches. Square Mall. Hope this helps.

personally i feel the VA Beach is the best of the three. it's one of the best large city school districts in the country. The districts i'd go for would be First Colonial, Kellam, Cox, and Princess Anne. Chesapeake is also very good. One of the top financial specialists at my bank is an graduate of IC Norcom in Portsmouth. I would never recommend Portsmouth OVER Va beach/chesapeake but i think Churchland district is decent considering its in Portsmouth.

I personally would stay away from Portsmouth. Northern Shores elementary in northeast Suffolk is good and has good special ed programs. In Chesapeake stay near Western Branch, Hickory, Great Bridge. I'm not real sure on VA Beach.

As far as convenience to Portsmouth - Western Branch is probably the ideal area. It would be minutes to work and the area is safe and close to shopping.

I hate to discount Portsmouth schools (Churchland specifically) since I live 1 min from the Western Branch School district line. However, I really do not know anything about Churchland Elem -my son is at Churchland High and loves it - but it is in a nice established subdivision.

My son is 7 yrs old and also has autism and was also diagnosed w/MR. We are in the Hickory school district in Chesapeake and he has been in a program called SECEP for several years now. SECEP is available through the public school system. If you just Google SECEP you 'll be able to pull it up to get more info. Initially we weren't real pleased w/his progress, however since transferring to a different class, he is doing much better. Getting a good teacher is key! There are only four other students in his class and there is one teacher and three aides so he gets a lot of attention and one on one. There are also a few private schools for autistic children...Rivers Bend Academy in Suffolk, VA and Linkhorn Academy in Virginia Beach, VA. In addition to the schools, there are also establishments that offer ABA...the Mea'Alofa Autism Support Center and Step By Step Consulting. I've heard awesome things about Step By Step Consulting! Hope this info helps w/your search!
