My boyfriend lives in Hsbrg (3rd st - Fox Ridge Development). While we feel safe there, when out, we have seen an occasional prostitute pickup and on new's years an obvious drug dropoff when a bicycle pulls up to a car w/NY plates. The thing that has annoyed us the most has been the number of times we (mainly, he) is asked for money. We feel something must be done regarding the homeless problem (It's not always the homeless population asking, sometimes I just think it's someone with a drug addiction. People dressed well, etc. but still asking for money.) It happens on the street, in parking lots, and even once while pumping gas. I was recently in NYC and not once was badgered for $$.

My family is moving to the Harrisburg area. Looking to move east of the city between Harrisburg and Lebanon. What school district would you suggest. We are coming from Central Bucks School district that is one of the largest and most funded school district in the state. Looking for something just as good.

You can walk around, there's just no downtown to walk to.

I would highly suggest you look at Mechanicsburg, nice walkable downtown, good schools, great community feel.

I agree with you. There's a run down feeling about the city. There are some beautiful streets with nice architecture, and the Capitol is impressive. But, as a whole, my first impression of Hburg is that, while perhaps it is improving, it has a long way to go. I don't feel particularly safe there, would never walk around alone at night. It's unique to me in that way. It always feels abandoned if we go out for brunch somewhere on Sundays. There are a small number of quality businesses. It's a great fit for some, but for others, like me, it's a lackluster city. Maybe in ten years it will improve.

I grew up in Mechanicsburg in the 80s and 90s and agree. It's only gotten better since then too. It's a great place to raise a family with a real community feel to it. I was just there to visit my dad and I ran into some old friends at a local little league game. They're all parents / coaches now. The number of teams is smaller but the community aspect is still very present. It even has a couple local gems as far as food goes (I'm sure just about everywhere does, but I'm partial to Rakestraw's ice cream and Pizza Town's italian special sub ). I like that it actually has a bit of a walkable / bikeable downtown, some interesting architecture reminiscent of New England, and it hasn't been inundated with chain stores yet. If you want the chain stuff, it's only a 10 - 15 minute drive to the Carlisle Pike which has a bunch of them. There's a reason why many of the people I went to high school with came back after they got married
