I would be coming from Santa Fe if I did this. What is the living like on the island with the tall mountains? Is the economy lackluster there too?

Do you income to sustain you for a few months while you check things out? You will never know until you try!

Assuming you mean the Big Island? It has two "tall mountains". There also is a tall mountain on Maui.

Economy is more lackluster on the neighbor islands than it is on Oahu. Tourism is the main industry in Hawaii, and more tourists go to Honolulu than to the other islands. I've heard that tourism is picking up on Oahu, but still down on the Big Island.

What kind of work are you looking for?

The economy is still "in contraction". Many of the jobs listed in the paper are for room and board instead of a salary unless you have some sort of specialized skill set. Very few of them are for enough to live on.

The mountains on Kauai and Oahu seem taller than the ones on the Big Island since they are steeper and you are closer to them. The Big Island has really tall mountains but they are a gradual slope so they don't seem to loom over you as much. Flat ground is hard to find.
