First Humpback Whale of the Season
Sighted Off Maui's Coast

MA'ALAEA (MAUI), HI (October 20, 2010) -- The humpback whales are back in Maui County waters! Maui’s first reported humpback whale sighting of the season took place today about two nautical miles off Ukumehame (located between Ma’alaea and Lahaina). The whale was a lone subadult.

I think this is the second year in a row the first whale was spotted on October 20th. Very exciting! We did a blog post on it earlier today and posted three great pics from last year. When we get them on Flickr, I'll post a link!

I flew into Kauai on the 21st and I am pretty sure I saw 2 whales right off shore when landing. It was either that or the most humongous dolphins I have ever seen.

I just heard it tonight also!!! Wahooo While in Seward Alaska they left late Aug to around first of September. Thought they would be there soon... was more thinking when I come mid Nov but it makes sense being as soooo few were around by Sept 1st.

When they show on BI this is a great link for live hydrophone all season - looks like it isn't turned on yet. I will email and ask. The Alaska one got ruined last winter. The Jupiter Foundation - Live Audio

Can't wait to see them again. I know in WA they have been still spotting them last couple of weeks but this weeks weather horrible up to 40ft waves on coast. Aloha to whales and you!!
