Hey, thanks for all the tips!

I've done the Aiea loop trail a couple of time (the one with the airplane wreck). It's not so steep, as far as I remember, but does have a couple of tricky pieces. I was pretty slow doing it. Training with the pack is a great idea. Maybe I'll try getting out regularly for the next year, sometimes with a pack, and aim for the trail next summer. (It looks like we're doing BI this summer anyway, probably can't squeeze in Kauai as well.)

Any other tips about Oahu trails for training would be great. Thanks again.

If you are going to the Big Island, you should hike in to Waimanu Valley over the ridge from Waipio Valley. Its much wetter than Kalalau, more tropical. The hike is longer (18 miles) and more difficult, but well worth it.

Waimanu is only 8 miles ea. way, Kalalau is 11 ea way. I've done both, Kalalau is def. more difficult, but they are along the same lines. The Muliwai trail and Waimanu valley both are less visited, so you'll have less hikers, hippies, free loaders, etc. on both the hike and your stay. The valley is more open so you have a constant great view depending on your side. Musquitoes can be bad on the trail, watch out! I wouldn't say it's any more wet than Kalalau, they still have their dry and wet spots all together. Your best bet is to hitchhike into Waipi'o to the beach and walk from there, vice versa on the way back because hiking from parking down into Waipi'o really takes you out, and right before that wicket hot "Z Trail" you really want to save your energy! If there is some other hike in that area that is 18 mi. i've never heard of it, what is it? is it from a back way? I thought that was closed w/the earthquakes (part of the Kohala Ditch Trail maybe?) years ago and is too dangerous now to reopen.
