i lived for about 7 months on a island in the Caribbean working for a casino there and i learned to to do this with two guys also in the house where we lived at the time..

we each filled up four 5.gallon water bottles to use for cooking and drinking each day and they where sitting on stands ready to use each day ..we each had own wood water bottle stand for the bottle to allow it to be used

we filled up two buckets of water to do the socalled beach rise off when we got back to the house hat day for going to the ocean to swim ..the open top bucket had a lid on them and you rised yourself off with fresh water before going into the house ..

we used some of the drinking water to heat up and put into the sink to shave and brush our teeth with ..

do not shave on your days off only when you where working did you shave the rest of the time you let it grew and brushed your teeth and took a quick navy shower if you where going out that night on the island to local bar to play ..

we did navy type showers or saved shower water and went to the casino where they charge you $1.oo dollar to use the gym shower and a $1.oo for a clean towel after it closed before working the night shift and that was a better deal for me

they offered the workers the chance to use the casino shower set up for a small daily toten of $1.oo a shower and a $1.oo for a clean towel and it was timed for 10.mins in length before they shut the water off ..

so i would shave at the house and walk over to the casino carrying my garment bag holding my cloths and go to work in flip flops and shorts and wife beater with a plastic travel soap dish and underarm deodant in my pocket and use there shower there

i would allways feel alot better than trying to walk in summer heat and not sweat like a pig doing it and then try to go to work smeling like a pig who been sweating all night..

sunday was the laundry day for the whole village and that where really used the water for the house ..that why most of the single people tried to save as much water for there use on sunday for so you where not fined for going over the amount that day ..

i plan to that type of water used when i move full time the big island next year ..

Where are you planning on living on the Big Island? Someplace such as HOVE (aka Oceanview) where there isn't any county water available to the houses so they all depend on rain catchment systems and there is less than twenty inches of rain a year, then that sort of water conservation might be useful. Anywhere on the Hilo side of the island gets about ten feet of rain each year, water conservation isn't usually taken to that level.

You could probably use the ocean water to shave? But water isn't quite that scarce here--even in Oceanview, we have three catchment tanks spread out on our property, and while we don't intentionally waste water, we don't worry that much, especially recently since we've had a very wet winter/spring. We aren't anywhere near the beach and we generally don't spend all day sweating, either; Big Island living is not the Caribbean.

i sweated alot there in the Caribbean in the summer time ..the winter i was ok but the summer time i did swear alot when i was there for two diff tours for work ..

to me it was fun to live there on the island ..we lived allmost like it was 1800s style in the summer months because of the weather and we did not really use the lights in the house or stove in the kitchen .

we grilled out allmost every day in the summer for our meals

never really went into the house intill it was time to sleep and the two fans we had in each room going full blast to keep the air semi cool with a bucket of frozen ice and cold water to let the fans blow across to try and keep the room a temp where you could sleep in ..

days off you read a book in the hammock or watch a movie someone has gotten so movies where passed around alot..

you watched alot of movies there or boxed tv shows there ..i got hooked on charm the tv show because of watching it there when i was off worked

the one i did notice there when i went out was i never paid the socalled full vistor to the island price on food and drink there ..once they got to know you and you worked at the casino it was like the door opened up for you on the outer part of the island where you go to on your day offs ..

i enjoyed liveing there and it funny now they have all the modern world things like sat tv and internet and others as before it was nice change not to have to worry about that world comeing to the place and you could sit back after work with a beer and sandwich and watch the world go bye you front pouch and it did not matter how much you made or who you where in life it the island and it time for enjoyment of life and the time there ..

we where allowed to be able to ship two boxs a month to the island for personal supplies for you as long as all the supplies would fit inside a 22."inchs wide.-x-22".inchs.high.-x-22."inchs.long sized boxs on the one a month supply run that company allowed the workers to have space on that run for personal products to be shipped with the regular loads of supplies that came in week by the local shipping company run to the island ..

there was a place in Maimi we could fax the list of personal grooming supplies to and alot as you had money on the account to cover the items you bought ..so alot of people sent money there every week to cover the big first of the month buying they did .. now i hear they used amazon and it shipped to the company headquaters in Maimi and it still bought in once a month of the first shippment of the month to the island

they had a list of things you could get and they would box them up and ship them to you along with the regular mail run that came in on weds afternoon from Maimi and anything you order from another place like Amazon would come in that way ..
