If you don't mind, could you please let me know how it goes when you arrive regarding your dogs going through the quarantine check? I've never flown with mine, but will be doing so next year & I'm curious about the whole process (I'm aware of the prep papers/tests). My dog is only 8 lbs and wish I could have her in cabin with me. But what was the check in for the flight like and how long does it actually take once you land? Congratulations on your move!

I too would be interested to know about your particular pet processing experience.Moderator cut: Links to personal blogs are not allowed here. Please review the Terms of Service.

I will definitely post and let you all know how the dogs trip went. I am not anticipating any problems, but you just never know. We are doing the direct release program on Kona.

Just FYI, the dogs are 2 very large Golden Retrievers. One is 112 lbs and one is 87 lbs. They are brother and sister and almost 5 years old. They will be traveling with my Mother as checked baggage on United. United is one of the only airlines that can accommodate their kennels.

Hey Windride! Congrats on your move. My wife and I are looking to move to Hawaii in the next year. Your post reinforces all the excitement we feel.

Can you tell us how you went about finding your rental? Did you go over beforehand and check out some places? Just curious about your process. We were thinking of getting a vacation rental for a month and then finding a regular long-term rental. However, maybe you have a better way.

Thanks!

We brought 2 dogs and a cat with us on United when we moved over - all checked as baggage. The quarantine check at Kona was efficient and painless, however, you have to make those arrangements ahead of time with one of the local vets.
Our kids were brought from the plane to a room next to the baggage claim where they were checked out by the vet. The whole process took about 45 minutes from the time we landed as there were a couple of dogs processed before ours.

Sailing over sounds excellent. I've considered a liveaboard situation on the Islands, some nice boats for sale currently, some in Liveaboard marinas.

Keep us posted on what the harbor situations are like.

My step daughter and family just arrived in Hawaii. Hubby is in Army and was sent to Schofield Barracks. She wasn't looking forward to moving because of the 3 "toos". Too much water, too many volcanoes, and too far from Mama! lol She's enjoying it though and the kids like going to the pool at their hotel, where they'll be living till the Army gets their furniture there. And they don't come to pick it up till this week, and ship it by boat. Found a nice 3 BR apartment for $1895/month. We're hoping to get the money together for two tickets to fly out there next summer.
